Instagram end-to-end encryption stops on May 8: What happens to your DMs privacy?

Instagram will discontinue end-to-end encrypted direct messages on 8 May 2026, after which encrypted chats on Instagram will no longer be supported. Meta said users whose encrypted chats will be affected will receive guidance on how to download their messages and media before the change comes into effect. End-to-end encryption is a security system that ensures only the sender and recipient can read messages, preventing even the platform provider from accessing them.
