Offline UPI payments? UPI may soon work without the internet: How will it work?

India may soon enable offline UPI payments, allowing users to make transactions even without an internet connection on either their phone or the merchant's Point of Sale, or PoS device. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is expected to certify compatible PoS devices from leading merchant terminal manufacturers later this year. The feature will use Near Field Communication, or NFC technology, letting users tap and pay up to ₹2,000 without entering an MPIN. It could make payments possible on flights, underground metro stations and other low-connectivity areas.
