The government has approved the Reserve Bank of India's plan to issue 1 billion each of ₹10 and ₹20 polymer banknotes for field trials. If successful, these notes could be issued regularly alongside existing paper currency. Polymer notes are more durable than paper notes and can last much longer in circulation. The RBI is testing them as printing costs and the number of damaged banknotes continue to rise. Regular issuance will depend on the success of the field trials.
