More solar, yet power shortages: Why India struggles after sunset

Several Indian states, including Rajasthan and Gujarat, are seeking additional power from the Centre to avoid outages. India’s electricity shortfall reached 560 million units in September, the highest since August 2023. Hydropower output fell 20% amid weaker rainfall, while nearly 41 GW of generation capacity was offline. Several coal plants are also running with critically low fuel stocks. Limited battery storage means surplus daytime solar power cannot easily be shifted to evening hours, leaving other sources to meet peak demand.
