Who is Shelly Oberoi?
Aam Aadmi Party’s Dr Shelly Oberoi became Delhi’s new Mayor after three failed poll attempts. She won the mayor’s post with 150 votes after 75 days of declaration of MCD elections.
Oberoi described her priorities as the mayor of MCD saying that the party will fulfil the 10 guarantees they gave during the elections.
"Delhi will be cleaned and transformed. The promises made by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to the public will be fulfilled," she had said.
She also took on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying that they had not done any work in the 15 years of their reign in MCD, and had turned Delhi into garbage.

Oberoi, the first woman mayor of the corporation, will have a truncated tenure of just three months, and fresh elections for the post will need to be held in April 2023, as per the existing provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act.
Early life and education
Born in Delhi in 1983, Shelly Oberoi completed her schooling at Faith Academy. She pursued her Doctorate in Philosophy from Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) School of Management Studies (SOMS).
Oberoi has worked as an assistant professor at the University of Delhi and has been a part of various seminars, paper presentations, and research papers published in various national and international journals.
She delivers lectures on Gyan Darshan (Doordarshan) and Gyan Vani (105.6FM).
Awards and achievements
The 39-year-old is a life time member of the Indian Commerce Association, and has received awards for the best paper in different national and international conferences.
Oberoi has won Gold medal (Prof Manubhai Shah Award) in ICA Conference. She has also been awarded the "Miss Kamla Rani Prize" and received a scholarship for getting the highest marks during Graduation.
Political Career
Oberoi’s political journey began in 2013 when she joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as an activist, wherein she participated in many campaigns.
She was appointed as the party’s state vice president for the women’s wing in 2020.
Oberoi contested her maiden election in December 2022. It was for the municipal polls from ward number 86 in East Patel Nagar. She was successful in defeating BJP candidate Rekha Gupta by a margin of 269 votes.
