Who is Suresh Gopi?
Suresh Gopi is an Indian actor, playback singer, politician and BJP leader. He is currently serving as the Union Minister of State for Tourism & Petroleum and Natural Gas. He is the member of Parliament from Thrissur constituency in Kerala.
He helped BJP to open its tally in Lok Sabha from Kerala for the first time ever. In his second attempt, the actor turned politician won by 74,686 votes.
Early Life and Education
He was born in June 1958 in Alappuzha, Kerala and holds a bachelor of science degree in Zoology and Master of Arts degree in English literature. He has majorly worked for Malayalam Cinema along with having a significant presence in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi Cinema.
Cinema career
His first screen presence was in Odayil Ninnu, released in 1965 where he played a brief role as a child artist. However, in 1986, he made his debut as an adult with an uncredited role in Niramulla Raavukal.
He got a breakthrough by playing the lead role in 1992 released Thalastaanam.
In 1998, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor and Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Kaliyattam.
After the 2015 released film My God, he turned away from Cinema and joined politics. However, after a five year break he made a comeback with Varane Avashyamund released in 2020.
He has also hosted TV shows such as in 2012 telecasted Ningalkkum Aakaam Kodeeshwaran, which was the Malayalam version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
Later he also hosted Anchinodu Inchodinchu, a Malayalam Game Show on Surya TV.
Political career
2016: Joined BJP and got nominated to Rajya Sabha
2019: Contested the Lok Sabha election from Thrissur but lost against Congress’ TN Prathapan
2024: Won the Lok Sabha election from Thrissur
2024: Became Union Minister of State for Tourism & Petroleum and Natural Gas
