BMC to renovate 60 water bodies

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has drawn up a plan to renovate 60 water bodies in and around the city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The renovation work involves an estimated expenditure of Rs 100 crore as per a detailed project report prepared by BMC.

“We have prepared the detailed project report for the proposed renovation of water bodies in the city and its fringe villages to be taken up by BMC under JNNURM. BMC has already presented a proposal to the Orissa government and the state government will forward our proposal to the Centre”, Aparajita Sarangi, commissioner, BMC told Business Standard. Out of Rs 100 crore required for the renovation project, 80 per cent of the cost will be borne by the Centre while the Orissa government and BMC will equally share the balance 20 per cent cost.

Meanwhile, BMC has been sanctioned about Rs 500 crore under the JNNURM for implementation of a host of road and drainage projects. “These projects involve a complete overhaul of the sewerage projects in the city. Work on these projects is underway and these projects are scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2012”, she said.
