E-commerce start-up Gandhibagh.com on Friday formally announced foray in the Uttar Pradesh market with focus on the daily needs and grocery segments.

The company, over the past month, had been conducting its pilot project for the purpose and testing its operations before announcing the formal launch, Gandhibagh.com Chief Executive Officer Swetank Gupta told Business Standard in Lucknow.

He said Lucknow was one of the fastest growing cities in India with rapid demographical change and it had reached a stage where a new age channel for the delivery of daily needs was imperative to save on travel costs and time.

"We want to serve our customers with the best deals in grocery and daily need items without coaxing for the 'buy more to save more' dictum as employed by most of our competitors," he noted.

He said the company would refrain from inducing impulsive buying by the customers and only encourage purchase of actual needs.

Currently, there are about 250 employees and associates with the company across India, Gupta informed. Gandhibagh.com is planning to reach out to 50 cities in nine months.

"We are targetting to break even in the respective cities within a year of launching the local operations," he added.

He claimed Ganghibagh.com was clocking longer customer engagement — time spent by a customer on its portal — than most of the known e-commerce sites, according to the web matrices.
