Sony Corp today said it will release a new and bigger series of the world's thinnest, wall-mounted liquid crystal display television on November 20 as it pins hopes on government stimulus measures to boost demand ahead of the year-end shopping season.

The two new models under the Bravia ZX5 series will come with 46-inch and 52-inch display panels, whose thinnest parts are only 15.8 and 16.6-millimeters thick and weigh 22.7 and 28.2 kilograms, respectively.

Like the 40-inch LCD TV under the ZX1 series Sony released last autumn, the ZX5 series is also equipped with a wireless transmission function that will make it easier for the TVs to be mounted on walls without the need for cable attachments.

According to a survey conducted by Sony, more than 26 percent of customers planning to buy TVs during the year-end season want to purchase wall-mounted TVs.

The bottom part of the TV screens feature energy-saving backlights that use light-emitting diodes, making the two models eligible for the "eco-point" system to reward purchases of environmentally friendly consumer appliances.

Sony officials said they expect robust demand for the new TVs thanks to this government subsidy program, which expires at the end of next March.
