Tata Power today commissioned the fifth unit of 800 MW at the ultra mega power project (UMPP) through its wholly owned subsidiary Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL) in Mundra, Gujarat.

With this commissioning,  the entire 4,000 MW of Mundra UMPP  became commercially operational, the company said in a release today.

"The 4,000 MW Mundra UMPP is the first of the UMPPs that heralds the entry of 800 MW supercritical boiler technology in India, which is environment friendly and efficient. The total power generation capacity of Tata Power currently stands at 8,500 MW, reinforcing its position as the largest integrated power company in India," the statement further added.

Tata Power’s Mundra UMPP has been completed within one year from the date of commissioning of the first 800 MW Unit in March 2012.

The average gap taken between synchronisation of two units has been 3.5 months.

The technology used for the 4,000 MW Mundra UMPP and the choice of unit sizes will help save fuel, provide the nation with competitive generation and cut down the greenhouse gas emissions significantly as compared to regular coal-fired power stations, the company claimed.

CGPL is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed for setting up and operating the 4,000 MW Mundra UMPP. CGPL has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with seven procurers (distribution licensees) from five states, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab for the sale of contracted capacity.

All units have been commissioned.
