The Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court today suggested that in case of death of an advocate condolence meetings be held on Fridays at a fixed time to pay respects so that more time can be given to court proceedings.

More than 2.5 lakh cases are pending before the High Court and the Chief Justice had in the past expressed concern about it. Chief Justice Manjula Chellur, while hearing a case, asked a few senior lawyers to ponder over the possibility of holding condolence meeting on Fridays at a fixed time.

At present, the practice is to abstain from attending courts for a specific time suggested by the Bar Association and hold condolence meetings to pay respects to the lawyer on the day of his or her death or on the next working day. The court rose today at 3.30 pm instead of the regular schedule at 4.30 pm in order to condole the death of a counsel.
