Chhattisgarh sees 156 COVID-19 cases, 3 deaths, 410 recoveries

Chhattisgarh on Saturday reported 156 COVID-19 cases and three deaths, taking the tally to 10,01,037 and the toll to 13,511, an official said.

 

He said the recovery count touched 9,84,737 after 129 people were discharged from hospitals and 281 completed home isolation, leaving the state with 2,789 active cases.

Delhi records zero Covid fatality

No death due to COVID-19 was recorded in Delhi on Saturday, while 66 fresh cases were reported with a positivity rate of 0.09 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department.

 

This is the second time since the starting of the second wave of the pandemic in the national capital that zero fatality has been logged in a day.

Haryana extends lockdown till August 2

The Haryana government Saturday extended the coronavirus lockdown in the state by another week till August 2 to curb the spread of the pandemic.

 

"The Mahamari Alert-Surakshit Haryana is extended for another week, that is from July 26 (5 am onwards) to August 2 (till 5 am) in the state of Haryana," according to an order issued by Chief Secretary Vijai Vardhan in exercise of powers under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

 

According to the order, the conduct of entrance and recruitment examinations by different universities, institutions, government departments and recruitment agencies are allowed in the state while adhering to Covid protocols.

Nashik sees 105 new Covid-19 cases, 139 recoveries

Nashik district in Maharashtra on Saturday reported 105 fresh coronavirus positive cases, taking the tally to 4,01,843 while two fatalities pushed the toll to 8,491, officials said.

 

With 139 patients getting discharged during the day, the count of recoveries in the district rose to 3,92,022. With 5,902 new tests, the number of samples tested so far in Nashik district went up to 21,96,020, officials added.

Goa sees 144 cases, 213 recoveries

Goa's coronavirus caseload went up by 144 and reached 1,70,416 on Saturday, while the toll remained unchanged at 3,126 and 213 people got discharged, an official said. The recovery count in the state is 1,66,052, while the active caseload is 1,238, the official informed.

 

With 5,991 samples being examined in the past 24 hours, the number of tests in Goa went up to 10,27,335, he added. Goa's COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 1,70,416, new cases 144, death toll 3126, discharged 166052, active cases 1238, samples tested till date 10,27,335.

Rajasthan reports 27 new Covid cases, no deaths

Rajasthan reported 27 fresh COVID-19 cases on Saturday, while no deaths due to the infection took place in the state, according to an official report. Maximum of eight fresh cases were reported from Jaipur, it said.

 

The number of active cases in the state has reduced to 328. A total of 9,53,522 persons have tested positive so far and 9,44,242 of them have recovered. A total of 8,952 Covid patients have also died in the state.

Sikkim registers 225 new cases, 1 fresh fatality

Sikkim's COVID-19 tally rose to 24,823 on Saturday as 225 more people tested positive for the infection, while one fresh fatality pushed the Himalayan state's coronavirus death toll to 330, a health bulletin said.

 

West Sikkim district reported the highest number of new cases at 81, followed by East Sikkim (72), South Sikkim (71), and North Sikkim (one).

 

Sikkim now has 2,849 active cases, while 21,380 people have recovered from the disease, and 264 patients have migrated to other states so far, it said.

18,531 fresh cases, 98 deaths in Kerala

Kerala today recorded 18,531 fresh Covid-19 cases pushing the infection count to 32,54,064, with the test positivity rate (TPR) falling to below 12 per cent.

 

The TPR had crossed 11 per cent on July 19 after remaining below it for several weeks and had continued to rise till 13.63 per cent, on July 23. The number of people who succumbed to the virus rose to 15,969 with 98 more deaths.

US purchased extra 200 million doses of Covid jab: Pfizer

The US government has purchased an additional 200 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine. This brings the total number of doses to be supplied by Pfizer and BioNTech to the US government under its existing supply agreement to 500 million.

 

About 110 million of the additional doses will be delivered by December 31, 2021, while the remaining 90 million doses will be delivered by April 30, 2022, Pfizer and BioNTech announced in a statement on Friday.

China reports 13 new locally transmitted Covid cases

The Chinese mainland has reported 13 new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases, with 12 in Jiangsu and one in Sichuan, the National Health Commission said on Saturday.

 

Also reported were 22 new imported cases, of which five each were reported in Guangdong and Yunnan, four in Fujian, three in Sichuan, two in Shanghai and one each in Tianjin, Henan and Hubei, reports Xinhua news agency. No new suspected cases or death were reported in the day.

39 new cases push Jharkhand's tally to 3,46,885

Jharkhand's tally rose to 3,46,885 on Saturday as 39 more people tested positive for the infection, a health bulletin said. The state's coronavirus death toll remained unchanged at 5,122 as no fresh fatality was reported, it said.

 

East Singhbhum district registered the highest number of new cases at nine, followed by five in Ranchi. The state now has 299 active cases, while 3,41,464 people have recovered from the disease so far. The administration has tested 61,196 samples for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, it added.

Mizoram logs 653 fresh infections; 14-yr-old girl becomes state's youngest Covid victim

Mizoram's Covid-19 tally soared to 31,145 on Saturday as 653 more people, including 137 children, tested positive for the infection, while three fresh fatalities, that included a 14-year-old girl, pushed the northeastern state's coronavirus death toll to 134, a health official said.

 

The girl, who hailed from Aizawl, is the youngest person in Mizoram to succumb to the disease, the official spokesperson on Covid-19, Dr Pachuau Lalmalsawma said.

MP govt issues SOP for reopening of schools for Classes 11, 12 from July 26

The Madhya Pradesh government has issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) for reopening of schools for Classes 11 and 12 with 50 per cent attendance starting July 26, an official said on Saturday.

 

As per the SOP released on Friday, physical classes for students of Classes 9 and 10 standard classes will resume once a week from August 5, the official said.

 

Classes will be held twice a week for students of Classes 11 and 12, and virtual sessions will continue simultaneously, he said.

Odisha registers 1,864 new cases, 68 fresh fatalities

Odisha's Covid-19 tally soared to 9,65,715 on Saturday as 1,864 more people tested positive for the infection, while 68 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 5,445, a health official said.

 

As many as 1,082 new cases were reported in quarantine centres, while 782 fresh infections were detected during contact tracing.

 

High daily test positive rate (TPR) in the coastal belt remains a major cause of concern for the state government as it was 5.18 per cent in Cuttack, 4.34 per cent in Khurda and 3.43 per cent in Kendrapara on Friday, and is witnessing a rising trend.

The Odisha government has sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs 2.55 crore to the family members of 17 working journalists of the state who died due to COVID-19, an official release said.

 

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved a proposal in this regard put-forth by the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department on Friday. An assistance of Rs15 lakh each has been sanctioned for the families of 17 working journalists of the state, who died due to the infection.

CoronaVac vaccine: Results patchy, but the world can't ignore its usefulness

China's vaccine-development system has been busy during the pandemic. Two Chinese vaccines are now being used around the world: the Sinopharm vaccine and the CoronaVac vaccine.

Arunachal reports 480 new Covid-19 cases, 4 more fatalities

At least 480 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, taking the tally in the state to 45,188, a health department official said on Saturday.

 

The death toll rose to 212 after four more persons from Tawang, Lohit, Changlang and Upper Subansiri districts succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours, State Surveillance Officer Dr Lobsang Jampa said.

 

All the four patients died while undergoing treatment at various health facilities of the state, and they had comorbidities, he said.

San Francisco Covid cases rose faster than California, Bay Area

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases increased faster in San Francisco alone in the past week, as compared to the Bay Area and entire state of California, according to new data.

 

This was a rare occurrence for the city, which has had among the lowest virus rates in major US metropolitan areas throughout the pandemic, Xinhua news agency quoted the San Francisco Chronicle as saying in a report on Friday.

 

According to the California Data Coalition, the total number of new cases recorded over the past seven days in San Francisco was up 81.6 per cent from the previous seven-day period.

Over 29.8 mn unutilised vaccine doses still available with states, pvt hospitals: Govt

More than 29.8 million balance and unutilized Covid-19 vaccine doses are still available with the states, Union Territories and private hospitals, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.

 

Over 445.3 million vaccine doses have been provided to states and UTs so far through all sources and a further 8,558,360 doses are in the pipeline, it said.

 

Of this, the total consumption including wastage is 415,550,543 doses.

Karnataka government on Saturday permitted reopening of places of worship and amusement parks from July 25 with Covid-19 guidelines.

 

"Temples, Mosque, Churches, Gurudwaras and other religious places are allowed to open and its related activities pertaining to these places from July 25, 2021, with strictly adhering to the COVID-19 behaviour and SOP issued by the concerned department, However, jathres, temple festivals, processions, congregations not allowed," read a state government order.

 

The state also permits amusements parks and similar places to re-open with Covid-19 restrictions.

No fresh COVID-19 case in Andaman Nicobar Islands

The Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands did not record any new COVID-19 case in the last 24 hours, a health department official said on Saturday.

 

The COVID-19 tally in the archipelago remained at 7,525.

 

The union territory now has 17 active COVID-19 cases of which 15 are in the South Andaman district and two in the North and Middle Andaman district. The Nicobar district is now COVID-19 free as it has no active case, he said.

 

Two more persons recuperated from COVID-19 during the period, taking the total number of recoveries to 7,379, he said.

Vietnam locks down capital Hanoi for 15 days as cases rise

Vietnam announced a 15-day lockdown in the capital Hanoi starting Saturday as a coronavirus surge spread from the southern Mekong Delta region.

 

The lockdown order, issued late Friday night, bans the gathering of more than two people in public. Only government offices, hospitals and essential businesses are allowed to stay open.

 

Earlier in the week, the city had suspended all outdoor activities and ordered non-essential businesses to close following an increase in cases. On Friday, Hanoi reported 70 confirmed infections, the city's highest, part of a record 7,295 cases in the country in the last 24 hours.

China's Sinovac evaluates vaccine plant in Chile

Chilean authorities said on Friday that China's Sinovac had begun evaluating potential sites for the construction of a vaccine plant in Chile that could begin producing doses of the Chinese shot as early as the first half of 2022.

 

Chile, a global leader in vaccinating its citizens against the coronavirus, has leaned heavily on the Sinovac vaccine in its fast-paced mass vaccination program. The Andean nation also helped spearhead clinical trials of the shot late last year.

 

A delegation of executives from Sinovac this week visited potential sites for the factory near the capital Santiago and in Chile's northern desert.

RTPCR raw material can be supplied to pvt labs by KMSC: Kerala govt to HC

The Kerala government has informed the High Court here that raw materials for RT-PCR tests can be supplied to private labs here at a reasonable price so that they can conduct the test for Rs 500.

 

The state government also told the court that it has in principle agreed to the proposition that Kerala Medical Services Corporation (KMSC) can supply the materials as requested by private labs, as a temporary measure, particularly in light of the situation created by the pandemic.

India's Covid-19 vaccination coverage exceeds 427.8 mn

India has administered over 427.8 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine in its ongoing inoculation drive so far, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday.

 

As the new phase of universalisation of Covid-19 vaccination commenced from 21 June, 427,882,261 vaccine doses have been administered through 5,234,188 sessions, as per the provisional report till 7 am today out of which 4,267,799 vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours.

 

These include, 10,283,491 health care workers received their first dose of vaccine and 7,674,804 second doses while 17,844,127 front line workers were administered the first dose and 10,732,410 vaccine doses given as the second dose to front line workers.

Long queues outside vaccination centres in WB's Siliguri, women wait for hours to get jabbed

Following an alleged vaccine crisis in West Bengal, women, especially the mothers of children between the age group of 0-12 years, waited in long queues outside a Covid vaccination centre in Niranjan Nagar of West Bengal's Siliguri district on Friday for several hours to get their first shot of vaccine.

 

Sapna Paul, who had been waiting for hours in the queue said, "We are mostly mothers of kids between 0-12 years. We've been here since morning but to no avail. They've asked us to come tomorrow. We're not sure if we'll be vaccinated tomorrow either."

 

"There is no safety, social distancing here. It's like waiting here for the vaccine will give us corona. We want the government to slot our names beforehand for vaccination," she added.

Brazil suspends Bharat Biotech's Covaxin clinical trials

Brazilhas suspended the clinical studies of Bharat Biotech's COVID-19 vaccine, Covaxin following termination of the company's agreement with its partner there, the South American Country's health regulator said.

 

Bharat Biotech on Friday announced cancellation of the MoU it signed with Precisa Medicamentos and Envixia Pharmaceuticals LL.C for its COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin for the Brazilian market.

The termination of the pact comes after the deal with the Brazilian government for supply of 20 million doses of the vaccine landed in controversy and attracted investigation by authorities in that country.
