Karnataka education minister tests Covid-19 positive

Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Monday said he has quarantined himself at home after testing positive for coronavirus. "I will be home quarantined for a few days on the advice of doctors after testing positive for Covid-19.There is no panic as there are no symptoms," the minister tweeted. He was among those ministers who had attended the recent Assembly session. Many others who had attended the session tested positive including Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol, senior Congress leaders H K Patil and Dinesh Gundu Rao.

30% restaurants, bars in Maha to re-open immediately; rest will open gradually

Even as the industry rejoices reopening of restaurants and bars in Maharashtra on Monday, the difficulty over staff mobility, as the lockdown continues till the end of the month, funds and maintenance issues are expected to make it a gradual process over the month, the industry said.

"The option to re-open restaurants comes as a big relief to restaurateurs. Although, it is a good development, not all restaurants are geared up to re-open immediately. We expect only around 30 per cent of the restaurants to open starting Monday and the rest will re-open gradually through the month," Hotel and

Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) senior vice-president Pradeep Shetty said in a statement.

10% of world population may have been infected by Covid-19: WHO

The head of emergencies at the World Health Organisation says its best estimates indicate that roughly one in 10 people worldwide may have been infected by the coronavirus. Dr Michael Ryan, speaking Monday to a meeting of the WHO's 34-member executive board focusing on Covid-19, said the figures vary from urban to rural, and between different groups, but that ultimately it means the vast majority of the world remains at risk. The estimate which would amount to more than 760 million people based on current world population of about 7.6 billion far outstrips the number of confirmed cases as tallied by both WHO and Johns Hopkins University, now more than 35 million worldwide. Experts have long said that the number of confirmed cases greatly underestimates the true figure.

50% aspirants skip UPSC exam in Lucknow due to Covid-19 fear

Nearly 50 per cent of the candidates opted out of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) preliminary examination 2020 for selection to Indian Administrative and Allied Services in Lucknow.

 

The exam was conducted on Sunday. According to sources, as many as 43,921 candidates were registered for the examination at various centres in the city. About 21,790 (49.6 per cent) registered candidates appeared in the first shift for "general studies" paper.

Russia records 10,888 Covid-19 cases in past 24 hours

Russia has registered 10,888 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, up from 10,499 yesterday, taking the cumulative case total to 1,225,889, the country's coronavirus response center said on Monday.

 

"In the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 10,888 Covid-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 2,861 (26.3 per cent) were detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response center said in a statement, specifying that the total count has reached 1,225,889.

Biden tests negative for Covid-19 again

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has tested negative for Covid-19 for the second time since US President Donald Trump's October 2 announcement that he and the First Lady were infected with the virus.

In a statement on Sunday, Biden's election campaign said that he was administered a PCR test, which came back negative, reports The Hill news website.

Just hours after Trump's announcement, Kevin O'Connor, the former Vice President's primary care physician, had said that Biden and his wife Jill had undergone PCR testing "Covid-19 was not detected".

Compensation to kin if patient dies due to hospital laxity: HC

The Bombay High Court on Monday said if a Covid-19 patient dies in a state or civic-run hospital due to culpable negligence on part of the medical facility, then his/her family members would be entitled for compensation.

A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice N J Jamadar said the state government has a duty and responsibility towards its citizens.

The bench was hearing a public interest litigation filed by BJP leader Ashish Shelar, raising concerns over the manner in which hospitals run by government and civic bodies across Maharashtra were managing and disposing bodies of Covid-19 patients.

With 1430 new Covid-19 cases Thane tally reaches 181,499

The Covid-19 tally in Thane reached 181,499 with the addition of 1,430 new cases in the Maharashtra district, an official said on Monday. The district also reported 30 deaths due to Covid-19 on Sunday, taking the toll to 4,589, he said.

 

Out of the new cases, 393 were reported from Kalyan town, 373 from Thane city, 285 from Navi Mumbai, and the remaining from other parts of the district, the official said.

 

As of now, there are 17,634 active Covid-19 cases in the district, while 1,59,276 patients have recovered, he said.

Odisha reports 2,617 new Covid-19 cases, 17 fatalities

At least 2,617 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in Odisha on Monday, which raised the tally to 2,35,330, while 17 fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 924, a health department official said.

 

Of the new cases, 1,521 were reported from various quarantine centres and the rest were detected during contact tracing, he said.

 

Khurda district, of which state capital Bhubaneswar is a part, reported the maximum number of new cases at 506, followed by Bargarh at 148.

44 new Covid-19 cases detected in Ladakh

Forty-four new cases of coronavirus were detected in Ladakh, taking the infection tally in the Union Territory to 4,521, officials said on Monday.

With 39 more patients cured of the contagion, the number of active cases in the region stands at 1,106 773 in Leh district and 333 in Kargil district, the officials said.

They said 37 persons tested positive for Covid-19 in Leh district and another seven in Kargil district during the past 24 hours.

Telangana coroanvirus update: Covid-19 tally breaches 200,000 mark

The coronavirus tally in Telangana crossed the two lakh mark with 1,335 new cases being reported, a state government bulletin said on Monday.

 

The fresh infections took the total count to 2,00,611, while the death toll rose to 1,171 with eight more fatalities, it said, providing data as of 8 pm on October 4.

 

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for 262 of the 1,335 cases, followed by Rangareddy (137), Medchal Malkajgiri (91), Karimnagar (83) and other districts. Read on...

16 new coronavirus cases in Andaman and Nicobar; tally rises to 3,884

The coronavirus tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 3,884 on Monday as 16 more people tested positive for the virus, a health official said.

 

Twelve new patients were detected during contact tracing, while four have travel history, he said.

 

Seven more people were cured of the disease, the official said.

 

The Union territory now has 182 active coronavirus cases, while 3,649 people have been cured of the disease and 53 patients have succumbed to the infection so far, he said.
