UK crosses grim Covid death toll of 100k, Johnson says hard to compute sorrow

The UK on Tuesday hit another grim COVID-19 milestone as the country's death toll from the deadly virus crossed 100,000 since the peak of the pandemic last year, with another 1,631 daily deaths. The total number of fatalities in the country has reached 100,162.

"It's hard to compute the sorrow contained in that grim statistic, the years of life lost, the family gatherings not attended and for many relatives not even the chance to say goodbye," said UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as he unveiled the latest figures at a briefing from 10 Downing Street in London. Johnson promised that the country will commemorate the lives lost together at a future date and also the "immense national effort" to tackle the pandemic from health workers to scientists developing vaccines and key workers.

Noida reports 6 new Covid-19 cases, recovery rate 99.43%

Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar recorded six new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday that pushed the district's infection tally to 25,327, official data showed. The number of active cases in the district came down to 52 from 58 the previous day, while its recovery rate surged to 99.43 per cent, according to the data released by the UP Health Department for a 24-hour period.

Also, 12 more patients got discharged during the period with the overall recoveries reaching 25,184, the fifth highest in the state. Gautam Buddh Nagar has a death toll of 91 with a mortality rate of 0.35 per cent. The recovery rate of COVID-19 patients reached 99.43 per cent, the statistics showed. Gautam Buddh Nagar stands 34th among districts in the state in terms of the number of active cases and 28thin mortality due to the pandemic, it showed.

342 test Covid-19 positive in Mumbai; active cases at 5,716

Mumbai reported 342 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, while six more patients succumbed to the infection, the city civic body said. With this, the number of COVID-19 cases rose to 3,06,735, while the death toll increased to 11,313 in the financial capital, said an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Also, 778 patients were discharged from hospitals, pushing the tally of recovered cases to 2,88,801, he said. There are 5,716 active cases in the city, where 27,29,011 tests for detection of COVID-19 have been conducted till now, the official said. There are 188 active containment zones in the city, he added.

Bengal reports 295 new Covid-19 cases, 9 fresh fatalities

West Bengal's Covid-19 tally rose to 5,68,650 on Tuesday as 295 more people tested positive for the infection, while nine fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 10,131, a health bulletin said. As many as 409 more people have been cured of the disease, pushing the recovery rate among the patients in the state to 97.16 per cent.

North 24 Parganas district reported the highest number of new cases at 91, followed by Kolkata at 83. Three fresh fatalities were reported in North 24 Parganas, two each in Kolkata and Nadia and one each in Howrah and Paschim Medinipur. The state now has 6,028 active cases, while 5,52,491 people have recovered from the disease so far, the bulletin said.

2.02 mn healthcare workers vaccinated against Covid-19 across India so far

The cumulative number of healthcare workers vaccinated against Covid-19 crossed 2.02 million lakh on Tuesday. A total of 20,29,424 beneficiaries (till 7 pm Tuesday) were vaccinated through 36,572 sessions, as per the provisional report, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

The countrywide Covid-19 vaccination program was conducted successfully on the eleventh day. In view of Republic Day celebrations across the country, limited number of sessions in limited States were conducted today, the ministry said.

As per the provisional till 7 pm today, 5,615 beneficiaries were vaccinated in five states. These are: Andhra Pradesh (9), Karnataka (429), Rajasthan (216), Tamil Nadu (4926) and Telangana (35). 194 sessions were held till 7 pm today.

Karnataka reports 529 fresh infections, four deaths

Karnataka on Tuesday reported529 fresh coronavirus cases and four deaths, taking the total infections to 9,36,955 and fatalities to 12,204, a PTI report said. A department bulletin said 738 patients were discharged today after recovery. The active cases stood at 6,633 including 147 patients in the ICU.

 

The caseload include 9,18,099 discharges. Bengaluru urban district accounted for 276 fresh infections and two fatalities. Cumulatively, the city has reported 3,97,609 infections, 4,382 deaths, 3,88,962 discharges, including 452 on Tuesday, and 4,264 active cases.

96 new coronavirus cases in Haryana; no death in 24 hours

Haryana recorded 96 fresh coronavirus cases on Tuesday, while no death due to the infection took place in the past 24 hours, a health department's bulletin said. It was for the first time in over three months that the state did not report any COVID-19 related fatality during a 24-hour period. Earlier on October 18, the state did not report any death during the same period, according to PTI.

 

It is also after many months that the daily COVID-19 cases have fallen below 100. The total number of fatalities in the state stand at 3,014, same as on Monday, according to the bulletin. The 96 fresh cases included 34 from Gurgaon and 17 from Faridabad. The total number of infections reported in the state so far have now risen to 2,67,417, the bulletin said.

Maharashtra reports 2,405 coronavirus cases, 2,106 recoveries; 47 die

Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally on Tuesday rose to 20,13,353 after it recorded 2,405 fresh cases, said a state health department official. The state also reported 47 deaths, taking the fatality count to 50,862, he said. Also, 2,106 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, pushing the tally of recovered people to 19,17,450, PTI reported.

 

With this, the number of active cases stood at 43,811.

 

Mumbai city reported 342 cases during the day, which pushed its overall case count to 3,06,740, while its death toll rose to 11,317 after nine more patients succumbed to the infection, the official said. With 57,219 new tests, the number of tests conducted in the state has gone up to 1,42,57,998.

Tamil Nadu reports 523 new coronavirus cases

Tamil Nadu recorded 523 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, pushing the overall tally to 8,35,803. Recoveries outnumbered new cases, with 595 people being cured of the virus, as total recoveries touched 8,18,742. Active cases stood at 4,736, according to Press Trust of India.

 

Five people succumbed to the virus, taking the total deaths in the state to 12,325, according to a Health bulletin issued by the government.

 

All the victims suffered from co-morbidities. Chennai had the maximum new cases of 168, followed by Coimbatore at 48 and Chengalpattu--37. Once again, Kallakurichi and Perambalur districts had no new cases while many others reported single digit infections. Over 1.57 crore samples have been tested by RT-PCR, the bulletin said, adding the state had 254 testing faciliities, with 186 of them being private ones.

UK launches new global platform to track new Covid-19 variants

The UK launched a New Variant Assessment Platform on Tuesday, which it says will offer the country's world-leading genomics expertise to identify new variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 to countries who do not have the resources to do so, PTI reported.

 

As part of the UK's Presidency of the G7 this year, UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock outlined the plans in a speech at the think tank Chatham House the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London as he laid out his vision for a stronger, more collaborative and effective global health system, not just in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, but to ensure the international community is better prepared for future threats.

 

This pandemic has shown that the foundations of so many of the exciting experiences that make life worth living are contingent not just on our health, or the health of our neighbours, but the health of people we've never met. When one of us suffers, we all suffer, said Hancock.

India's active cases drop below 1.78 lakh, now just 1.60% of total caseload

The number of active coronavirus cases in the country dropped to 1,77,266 on Tuesday, constituting just over 1.60 per cent of the total infection count, the Health Ministry said. In a statement, the ministry said active cases declined by 6,916 in a 24-hour period, according to PTI.

 

"Active cases per million population is lowest in the world (128). Germany, Russia, Brazil, Italy, the UK and the USA have much higher cases per million population," it said.

 

The ministry said India has crossed a crucial milestone in its fight against the global pandemic as the daily new cases have touched a new low, dropping below 10,000 on Tuesday. India Tuesday reported 9,102 cases, the lowest in 237 days, the ministry said. The daily new cases were 9,304 on June 4, 2020.

 

"With a sustained, pro-active and calibrated strategy of the Centre based on 'whole of government' and 'whole of society' approach, the daily new cases have seen a consistent decline. This has ensured a steady fall in daily fatalities too. The country has recorded less than 120 (117) fatalities in the last 24 hours after more than 8 months (8 months 9 days)," it said.

UK Covid-19 deaths top 100,000

Since the onset of the still raging coronavirus pandemic in the UK, the country's Covid-19 death toll has topped the grim milestone of 100,000 mark on Tuesday. According to health authorities, the country's death toll now stands at 104,000, the thid highest number of fatalities after the US, Brazil and India, reports the BBC.

 

The new death toll comes after a surge of cases in December 2020, leaving the UK with one of the highest Covid death rates globally.

 

The Office for National Statistics and its counterparts in Scotland and Northern Ireland registered 7,776 deaths involving Covid in the most recent week. In April 2020, there were two weeks with more than 9,000 Covid deaths registered across the UK, but there have been no other weeks with more than 7,000 deaths registered, data from the UK's national statisticians revealed.

Relative of virus victim asks to meet WHO experts in Wuhan

A relative of a coronavirus victim in China is demanding to meet a visiting World Health Organisation expert team, saying it should speak with affected families who allege they are being muffled by the Chinese government.

 

China approved the visit by researchers under the auspices of the UN agency only after months of negotiations. It has not indicated whether they will be allowed to gather evidence or talk to families, saying only that the team can exchange views with Chinese scientists.

 

I hope the WHO experts don't become a tool to spread lies, said Zhang Hai, whose father died of COVID-19 on February 1, 2020, after travelling to the Chinese city of Wuhan and getting infected.

 

We've been searching for the truth relentlessly. This was a criminal act, and I don't want the WHO to be coming to China to cover up these crimes.

Mizoram stood the test of Covid-19 pandemic: Governor

Mizoram Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on Tuesday said that Mizoram has stood the test of the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

Unfurling the Tricolour during the 72nd Republic Day celebrations at Lammual here, Pillai said that Mizoram has the lowest number of COVID-19 cases, lowest fatality rate and one of the best recovery rates in the country due to concerted efforts of the state government and selfless service of churches, NGOs and frontline workers.

 

"I feel this is something we can take pride in amidst these difficult times," he said.

India reported 9,102 fresh coronavirus cases in a day, the lowest in around eight months, as the infection tally reached 1,06,76,838, according to Union Health Ministry data on Tuesday. During the same period, 117 fatalities were recorded, also the lowest in over eight months, taking the death toll to 1,53,587. India had reported a single-day rise of 8,909 cases on June 3 and 103 deaths on May 16, according to a PTI report.

 

According to the health ministry, 1,03,45,985 people have recuperated from the disease so far pushing the national COVID-19 recovery rate to 96.90 per cent. The case fatality rate stood at 1.44 per cent.

 

There are 1,77,266 active cases of coronavirus infections in the country which comprises 1.66 per cent of the total cases reported so far. It was for the seventh consecutive day that the active caseload remained below 2 lakh.

Over 67,000 receive Covid-19 vaccine jabs on Day 6 in Rajasthan

Over 67,590 health workers were vaccinated on the sixth day of the inoculation drive against the coronavirus on Monday, officials said. According to an official spokesperson, 94,334 health workers were to be vaccinated at the 995 vaccination centres in 33 districts of the state. On Monday, 67,591 health workers (around 71.65 per cent of the day's target) were vaccinated.

During this period, 16 cases of AEFI (adverse events following immunization) were reported in the state, the spokesperson said. The vaccination drive started in the state on January 16 along with the launch of a nationwide campaign. The government has allocated four days a week for the vaccination.

Telangana begins Covid-19 inoculation drive for pvt health care

The Covid-19 inoculation drive for private healthcare personnel began in Telangana on Monday, with over 20,000 of them being administered the vaccine. The drive was held in all 33 districts. A total of 20,359 personnel were given the shots against the targetted 42,915, which worked out to 47.4 per cent, state Director of Public Health G Srinivasa Rao said in a release.

The cumulative number of beneficiaries vaccinated as on Monday was 1,30,607, while the total percentage of those who received the vaccine till Monday was 61 per cent. No serious or severe case of AEFI (Adverse Events Following Immunization) was reported on Monday. The five minor AEFI cases reported were stable, the release said. Several eminent doctors working in the private sector were administered the vaccine, it said.

President Kovind urges people to utilise 'lifeline', get vaccinated against Covid-19

Lauding the country's scientists for their success in manufacturing vaccines against coronavirus in record time, President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday urged citizens to "utilise the lifeline" and get vaccinated against COVID-19 according to laid down guidelines.

 

In his address to the nation on the eve of 72nd Republic Day, the President recalled the work done by corona-warriors in the fight against COVID-19 said the future generations will recall their heroic response to the crisis.

 

The President said that due to joint efforts, India has been able to keep the fatality rate lower in the country compared to that in developed countries.

Moderna says its Covid-19 vaccine works against new variants

US-based drugmaker Moderna on Monday said its Covid-19 vaccine retains neutralising activity against emerging variants first identified in the UK and South Africa.

 

Vaccination with the Moderna Covid-19 Vaccine produced neutralising titers against all key emerging variants tested, including B.1.1.7 and B.1.351, first identified in the UK and South Africa, respectively, the company said on the basis of a study.

 

However, the company also said it will test an additional booster dose of its Covid-19 vaccine (mRNA-1273) to study the ability to further increase neutralising titers against emerging strains beyond the existing primary vaccination series. Second, the company is advancing an emerging variant booster candidate (mRNA-1273.351) against the B.1.351 variant first identified in South Africa.

Kerala reports 3,361 coronavirus cases, 17 deaths

After testing 30,903 samples, Kerala on Monday reported 3,361 Covid 19 cases, while 5,606 people recovered from the disease in the past 24 hours, as per a release issued by the office of state Health Minister K.K. Shailaja. Kerala's test positivity rate stood at 10,88 per cent on Monday. Ernakulam district reported the maximum number of cases on Monday at 487, while Kasargod reported the least number of cases at 42.

 

Meanwhile, 17 persons succumbed to the dreaded virus on Monday, taking the state's Covid death toll to 3,624.

 

Of those who tested positive on Monday, 73 persons came from outside the state, while 2,969 people contracted the disease through contact. As many as 43 health workers tested positive on Monday -- 18 at Kannur, followed by Kozhikode (6), Ernakulam (5), Thiruvananthapuram (4), Thrissur, Palakkad and Wayanad (2 each), and Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Malappuram (1 each).

Jammu and Kashmir records 64 new Covid-19 cases in a day

Jammu and Kashmir recorded 64 fresh COVID-19 cases on Monday taking the infection tally in the Union Territory to 1,24,083, while no new death has been reported, officials said.

 

Of the fresh cases, 25 were reported from Jammu division and 39 from Kashmir, they said, adding Jammu district reported the highest 23 cases followed by 22 in Srinagar district.

 

Bandipora, Kulgam, Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Samba, Kishtwar, Poonch, and Reasi districts did not report any new case, an official said. The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 1,084, while 1,21,070 patients have recovered so far, the officials said, adding the death toll was 1,929.

Russia registers 19,290 Covid-19 cases in past 24 hours

Russia registered 19,290 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, down from 21,127 the day before, taking the tally to 3,738,690, the coronavirus response center said on Monday.

 

"Over the past day, 19,290 coronavirus cases were confirmed across 84 Russian regions, including 1,985 cases (10.3 per cent) that were detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the centre said, adding that the cumulative case count has now reached 3,738,690, with the rate of increase at 0.52 per cent.

 

Moscow confirmed 2,382 new coronavirus cases over the given period, down from 3,069 the day before. The Russian capital was followed by St. Petersburg with 2,116 cases, down from 2,929 the day before, and the Moscow Region with 1,163 new cases, down from 1,134 on Sunday. No new cases were registered in the Chukotka Autonomous Region.

Coronavirus cases in Indonesia near one million

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 9,994 within one day to 999,256, with the death toll adding by 297 to 28,132, the Health Ministry said on Monday. According to the ministry, 10,678 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 809,488.

 

The virus has spread to all the country's 34 provinces.

 

Specifically, within the past 24 hours, Jakarta recorded 2,451 new cases, West Java 2,022, Central Java 1,513, East Java 888 and South Sulawesi 606, among others. No more new positive cases were found in two provinces, namely Aceh and West Kalimantan.

Ladakh records 12 fresh coronavirus cases

Twelve more people have tested positive for coronavirus in Ladakh, pushing the infection tally to 9,687 in the Union Territory, officials said on Monday. All the new cases were detected in Leh on Sunday, they said.

 

Ladakh has so far recorded 129 COVID19-related deaths -- 85 in Leh and 44 in Kargil.

 

Nine more patients have recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, according to the officials. All the nine patients who were cured after successful treatment are residents of Leh, bringing down the active cases in the district to 61, they said, adding that there are only four active cases in Kargil district.
