UK records highest daily Covid-related death toll since March

Britain reported another 170 coronavirus-related deaths, the highest number of fatalities recorded in one day since March 12, according to official figures released Tuesday.

 

The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 131,149. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test, Xinhua news agency reported.

 

Another 26,852 people in Britain have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 6,322,241. The latest data came as Britain's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved the use of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine for the 12 to 17-year-olds.

Assam records 741 new COVID-19 cases, 11 fresh fatalities

Assam's COVID-19 tally mounted to 5,81,398 on Tuesday as 741 more people tested positive for the infection, while 11 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 5,513, a health bulletin said.

 

Three fresh fatalities were registered in Dibrugarh, and one each in Bongaigaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Sivasagar, and West Karbi Anglong districts.

 

A total of 1,347 coronavirus patients have died due to other ailments so far, it said. Kamrup Metropolitan district, under which Guwahati falls, recorded the highest number of new cases at 153, followed by Barpeta (46), Lakhimpur, and Sonitpur (41 each). The state now has 7,425 active cases, while 5,67,113 people have recovered from the disease, including 1,012 in the last 24 hours, the bulletin said.

UK regulator approves Moderna's Covid shot for 12 to 17-year-olds

 The UK's health regulator has approved Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine for use in children aged 12 to 17 years, it said on Tuesday, weeks after Pfizer's shot was given the green light for deployment ahead of schools reopening.

 

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has confirmed the vaccine, known as Spikevax, is safe and effective in this age group, it said.

 

While most children develop mild or no symptoms with COVID-19, they are still able to spread the virus and some remain at risk of becoming seriously ill.

 

Moderna's vaccine was recommended for use in adolescents by European regulators in July and is awaiting U.S. authorisation.

It is already approved for people over the age of 18 in the UK.

Delhi logs 38 fresh Covid cases, 4 deaths in 24 hrs

The national capital recorded 38 fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours, while four persons succumbed to the disease in the same time span, taking its overall Covid death toll to 25,073, as per the daily health bulletin released by the Delhi government on Tuesday.

 

The fresh cases took Delhi's overall Covid tally to 14,37,156, the bulletin said. Delhi's recovery rate continued to remain at 98.22 per cent while its test positivity rate stood at 0.07 per cent. The national capital presently has 471 active cases, the bulletin said.

 

A total of 30 Covid patients were discharged from different hospitals following recovery in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 14,11,612. As per the bulletin, 156 Covid patients are under home isolation in the national capital at present.

Over 1.5 lakh people received COVID-19 vaccine in Delhi on Monday

The Delhi government on Tuesday said over 1.5 lakh people received COVID-19 vaccine doses in the city the previous day, with 1,10,081 of them getting their first jab. A total of 1,16,76,224 vaccine doses have been administered in Delhi so far, according to the city government's daily vaccination bulletin.

 

Of the total, 83,63,190 were first doses and 33,13,034 second doses, it showed.

 

As of Tuesday morning, Delhi had only four days of vaccine stocks left, the bulletin claimed. The national capital had a balance stock of 6,08,150 coronavirus vaccines, of which 3,48,240 doses were of Covishield and 2,59,910 of Covaxin. The national capital's current vaccination capacity stands at 1,77,496 doses daily, the bulletin stated.

Andhra Pradesh registers 1,063 more Covid cases, 11 deaths

Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday registered 1,063 new Covid cases, taking the state's overall tally beyond 19.9 lakh, even as its active cases dropped to 16,341.

 

As many as 1,929 more persons recovered from the disease in the past 24 hours, taking the state's total number of recoveries over 19.6 lakh.

 

Chittoor district reported the highest number of cases at 211, followed by Nellore with 198, West Godavari 147, Guntur 104, Krishna 103, Prakasam 98, Visakhapatnam 61, East Godavari 53, Srikakulam 30, Kurnool 17, Vizianagaram 12, and Anantapur 10. East Godavari tops the chart with more than 2.8 lakh cases, followed by Chittoor with 2.3 lakh.

Madhya Pradesh sees 11 new Covid-19 cases; active infections at 95

The Covid-19 caseload in Madhya Pradesh rose to 7,92,054, after 11 persons tested positive for the infection on Tuesday, an official from the state health department said. The toll in the state stands at 10,515, while the count of recoveries has reached 7,81,444, the official said, adding that the state is left with 95 active cases. With the addition of 68,740 swab samples tested during the day, the total number of tests conducted in the state went up to 1,56,55,846, the official said. (PTI)

Kerala on Tuesday logged 21,613 new Covid-19 cases pushing the infection count to 37,03,578, as the number of people succumbing to the disease rose to 18,870 with 127 additional deaths. 139 children among 639 new Covid-19 patients in Mizoram

Mizoram's Covid-19 tally rose to 49,350 on Tuesday as 639 more people, including 139 children, tested positive for the infection, while two fresh fatalities pushed the northeastern state's coronavirus death toll to 184, a health bulletin said. Hong Kong lengthens quarantines for 16 countries

Hong Kong will tighten entry restrictions for travelers arriving from the United States and 15 other countries beginning Friday, extending the quarantine period to 21 days. Previously, the 15 countries, which also include Malaysia, Thailand, France and the Netherlands, were classified as medium-risk, with travelers able to serve only 7 days of quarantine if they were fully vaccinated and tested positive for antibodies prior to leaving for the city. Retail sales touch 72% of pre-pandemic levels

Retail sales across the country continued to recover in July, reaching 72 per cent of the pre-pandemic levels of July 2019, and businesses are pinning hopes on the festive seasons for a further boost, Retailers Association of India (RAI) said on Tuesday. According to the retailer's body, the rate of recovery was 50 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in June 2021. In its latest business survey, RAI retail businesses in south India have indicated a very sharp comeback in July 2021 with sales at 82 per cent of the pre-pandemic levels (July 2019), as against 50 per cent sales in June 2021. Petrol demand above pre-Covid levels, diesel just a fraction behind

The month of August had brought the country a step closer to reaching pre-Covid levels of sales of auto fuels, a sign that fuel demand recovery is progressing in line with general economic recovery being seen in the country.

 

While sales of petrol has already crossed pre-Covid levels more than a month ago, diesel sales has begun inching up and is just 8 per cent short of touching pre-Covid levels as of August 15.

 

State-owned fuel retailers have sold 0.94 million tonnes (mt) of petrol between August 1-15, 2021. This is 9.4 per cent increase over dales seen in same period of previous year and 3.7 per cent above 0.95 mt sales in first half of August, 2019.

Maharashtra: 80% samples for genome sequencing test positive for Delta variant

Out of the total samples sent for genome sequencing of COVID-19 positive patients in Maharashtra, 80 per cent of samples have tested positive for Delta variant, according to the state health department.

 

Maharashtra is conducting genome sequencing tests of COVID-19 positive patients' samples on a regular basis to ascertain the extent of spread of mutants of the virus.

 

According to a state health department, as many as 76 patients have been found to be positive with Delta Plus variant, out of which five have died so far and 71 have recovered. As of now, no patient infected with Delta Plus variant is under treatment.

 

To intensify its efforts to identify virus mutants, Maharashtra Health Department has selected five laboratories and five hospitals as sentinel centres. Every fortnight, each centre sends 15 samples to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for genome sequencing.

Wearing oxygen masks and carrying placards, Samajwadi Party MLAs and MLCs on Tuesday protested against the BJP government outside the Uttar Pradesh Assembly here over its "mismanagement" of the COVID-19 situation, price rise and other issues.

 

On the first day of the Monsoon session of the House, SP members also staged a dharna at the Chowdhury Charan Singh statue inside the assembly premises and raised slogans against the government.

Do I need a Covid-19 booster shot? Answers on how to stay protected

The increasing prevalence of new coronavirus variants is raising questions about how well protected those who’ve already had their COVID-19 shots are against evolving forms of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Here, microbiology and infectious disease specialist William Petri of the University of Virginia answers some common questions about COVID-19 booster shots.

 

1. What is a booster shot?

Boosters are an extra dose of a vaccine given to maintain vaccine-induced protection against a disease. They are commonly used to bolster many vaccines because immunity can wear off over time. For example, the flu vaccine needs a booster every year, and the diphtheria and tetanus vaccine every 10 years.

 

Boosters are often identical to the original vaccine. In some cases, however, the booster shot has been modified to enhance protection against new viral variants. The seasonal flu vaccine, most notably, requires an annual booster because the flu virus changes so rapidly.

 

2. Do I need to get a COVID-19 booster?

UP jail inmates can now meet visitors with Covid protocol

Jail inmates in Uttar Pradesh can now meet their family members after a gap of almost six months when meetings were banned due to the second wave of the pandemic.

 

The state prison department has allowed the meeting from Monday across the state.

 

The visitors are required to come with a recent negative RT-PCR test report for Covid-19. Nearly 300 visitors met inmates in various Uttar Pradesh jails on Monday.

 

According to a press statement issued by the prison department, over 600 people reached various jails on Monday in order to meet their relatives or family members lodged in jails.

Covid-19 vaccine: India looking at $11 bn market opportunity

India's pharmaceutical sector is looking at an opportunity to the tune of $10 to 11 billion in the form of Covid-19 vaccine supply, in both domestic and export markets in the next three years, rating agency Care Ratings has said in a report.

 

However, the Indian vaccine makers are unlikely to get the premium pricing being enjoyed by US-based multinational companies which is anywhere between USD 15 and 25 per dose, their average realization could remain anywhere between USD 3.25 and USD 3.50 per dose, it said. On an aggregate level (i.e., domestic plus export), CARE Ratings expects supply opportunity of at least around USD 10-11 billion during the next three years for the Indian vaccine manufacturers, the report said.
