Over 57.16 crore Covid vaccine doses administered in India: Govt

The total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 57.16 crore, including over 48 lakh doses given on Thursday, according to the Union health ministry.

 

While 26,66,831 beneficiaries in the age group of 18-44 years received the first dose, 6,01,437 were administered the second dose of the vaccine on Thursday, the ministry said in a statement.

 

"Cumulatively, 21,13,11,218 persons in the age group of 18-44 years across 37 states and Union territories have received their first dose and a total of 1,79,43,325 have received their second dose since the start of Phase-3 of the vaccination drive," it said.

 

The cumulative vaccination coverage of 57,16,71,264 doses is segregated on the basis of population priority groups, the ministry said.

 

On the 216th day (August 19) of the vaccination drive, a total of 48,84,440 vaccine doses were given -- 36,35,752 beneficiaries received the first dose and 12,48,688 were administered the second dose -- according to a provisional report compiled at 7 pm. The final report for the day would be compiled by late night.

Covid-19: Haryana records 2 fatalities, 25 new cases

Haryana on Thursday reported two Covid-related fatalities taking the cumulative toll to 9,664 while 25 new infections pushed the total case count to 7,70,291, a health bulletin said.

 

According to the health department's daily bulletin, the latest deaths were reported from Hisar and Fatehabad districts, it said.

 

Of the news cases, five were reported from Gurgaon, while four cases were from Yamunanagar district among others.

 

There are 671 active Covid cases in the state, while the total recoveries so far are 7,59,956.

 

The state's recovery rate is 98.66 percent, the bulletin said.

Madhya Pradesh sees 18 new Covid-19 cases; active infections at 95

Madhya Pradesh on Thursday recorded 18 fresh cases of coronavirus that took its tally of infections to 7,92,081, an official from the health department said.

 

The count of recoveries rose to 7,81,471, while the toll remained unchanged at 10,515, the official said, adding that the central state is left with 95 active cases.

 

With the addition of 77,676 swab samples tested during the day, the total number of tests conducted in the state rose to 1,58,04,131, the official said.

 

As per an official release, a total of 3,95,80,879 Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far in the state, of which 4,27,870 jabs were given on Thursday.

 

Coronavirus figures in MP are as follows: Total cases 7,92,081, new cases 18, death toll 10,515, recovered 7,81,471, active cases 95, number of tests so far 1,58,04,131.

Active infections fall below 20,000 as TN logs 1,702 new cases, 29 deaths

Tamil Nadu continued to record a decline in fresh infections with 1,702 new COVID-19 cases recorded on Thursday, pushing the caseload to 25,95,935, the health department said, according to a PTI report.

 

The death toll rose to 34,639, with 29 people succumbing to the virus.

 

Recoveries outnumbered new infections with 1,892 people getting discharged in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 25,41,432, leaving 19,864 active infections, a bulletin said. Active infections dropped below the 30,000 mark in Tamil Nadu on July 15.

Kerala sees over 21,000 new cases for third straight day

Kerala on Thursday logged 21,116 fresh COVID-19 cases pushing the total infection count to 37,46,121, as the number of people succumbing to the disease climbed to 19,246 with 197 additional deaths, PTI reported.

 

In the last 24 hours, 1,30,768 samples were tested and the TPR was found to be 16.15 per cent. So far, 2.99 crore samples have been tested, it said.

Pregnant women don't experience more severe symptoms of Covid vaccines: Study

Pregnant and lactating women who receive the COVID-19 vaccine do not experience symptoms any more severe than their non-pregnant counterparts, according to a survey over 17,000 individuals, PTI reported.

The study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, enrolled pregnant or lactating women and those who were neither pregnant nor lactating in January 2021.

The women were invited to describe their reactions after receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. By March, 17,525 individuals had responded.

WHO Africa: Covid-19 booster shots make 'mockery' of equity

Rich countries' decisions to roll out COVID-19 booster shots threaten the promise of a brighter tomorrow for Africa, the Africa director for the World Health Organization said Thursday, warning that as some richer countries hoard vaccines, they make a mockery of vaccine equity, AP reported.

Matshidiso Moeti and other African health officials, including the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, had warned against booster shots in recent weeks as less than 2% of the population on the continent of 1.3 billion people is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Odisha logs 1,041 new Covid-19 cases, 68 fresh fatalities

Odisha's COVID-19 tally rose to 9,98,187 on Thursday as 1,041 more people, including 128 children and adolescents, tested positive for the infection, while 68 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 7,154, a health official said, according to PTI.

Though the daily count had remained below 1,000 for three consecutive days from Monday, it rose to 1,041 in the last 24 hours.

The daily test positivity rate (TPR) also witnessed an increase to 1.57 per cent from 1.43 per cent on Wednesday, the official said.

Covid-19 second wave over in T'gana: Health official

The second wave of COVID-19 has come to an end in Telangana with the virus situation fully under control in the state at present, a Health department official has said, according to PTI.

"It can be said that second wave has fully come to an end in Telangana. If we take various parameters like the number of new cases being reported, daily positivity rate and hospitalisation rate, coronavirus, as of now, is fully under control across Telangana, in all districts and all regions," state Director of Public Health G Srinivasa Rao said.

IndiGo to resume flights to Dubai from early Friday morning

A day after IndiGo has been banned for operating flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a week, the airline on Thursday said flights will resume from Friday early morning.

"IndiGo will recommence flight operations between India and UAE from 0130 IST (2000 UTC) tonight (August 20). We have informed all our passengers and any inconvenience caused is regretted," the airline said. According to sources, the suspension came into effect from Tuesday for carrying passengers who had not undergone a rapid-PCR test at the departure airport.

We may have Covid-19 vaccine for children by Sept: Director, ICMR-NIV

Coronavirus vaccine for children might be available for use in September or October this year, Dr Priya Abraham, the Director of Pune's (Indian Council of Medical Research) ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV) informed, ANI reported.

In an interview with an OTT channel of the Department of Science and Technology, Abraham said, "Phase 2 and 3 trials of Covaxin are underway for children between 2-18 years. Hopefully, the results will be available soon, which will then be presented to the regulators. So, by September or just after it, we may have COVID-19 vaccines for children."
