Trump files new election challenge, Georgia announces recount

President Donald Trump's campaign on Wednesday took another step in its legal strategy to upend his US election loss by filing a lawsuit in Michigan while Georgia announced a recount and President-elect Joe Biden focused on laying the foundation of his incoming administration.

 

The Republican president's team went to federal court to try to block Michigan, a Midwestern battleground state that he won in 2016, from certifying the Nov. 3 election results. Trump trailed by roughly 148,000 votes, or 2.6 percentage points, in unofficial Michigan vote totals.

Rwandan genocide suspect enters not guilty pleas at UN court

An elderly former radio station owner appeared Wednesday in a United Nations courtroom where his lawyer entered not guilty pleas to allegations that he armed militias with machetes and other weapons and incited them to take part in Rwanda's 1994 genocide.

 

It was the first time Flicien Kabuga had appeared before the UN's International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals since he was transferred to The Hague following his arrest outside Paris in May.

 

Kabuga, 85, sat in a wheelchair in court, flanked by two guards. He is charged with crimes including genocide, complicity in genocide, incitement to genocide, persecution and extermination. He faces a maximum life sentence if convicted.

More tech executives than tech critics on Biden's transition team

Far more executives from technology companies than outspoken tech critics were named to U.S. President-elect Joe Biden's transition team on Tuesday, offering clues on who will decide on filling key roles and ultimately influence his administration's thinking in coming years.

 

Tech companies have been trying to strengthen their relationship with a future Biden administration to ensure they have a voice in an onslaught of federal and state investigations of their business practices.

 

The Biden transition team released a list of agency review teams on Tuesday.

 

Amazon.com Inc's Tom Sullivan, an executive on the public policy team, will be part of Biden's review team overseeing the Department of State. Similarly, Mark Schwartz from Amazon's cloud computing arm, who is also a former Obama administration official, will be weighing in on decisions for the Office of Management and Budget.

Georgia announces hand recount of votes

The US state of Georgia on Wednesday announced a hand recount of votes as President-elect Joe Biden has a narrow lead of over 14,000 over President Donald Trump.

 

With the margin being so close, there is a need to recount, Georgia's secretary of state Brad Raffensperger said. He is from the Republican Party.

 

The hand recount of votes, however, will be only for the presidential election, he said.

In TV studio after release from jail, Arnab dares Thackeray

Back in the familiar environs of the TV newsroom after a week in judicial custody, journalist Arnab Goswami on Wednesday hit out at Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for arresting him in a 'fake' case.

 

"Uddhav Thackeray, listen to me. You lost. You have been defeated," said Goswami (47), while being surrounded by visibly relieved colleagues from his Republic TV channel.

 

Soon after his release from Taloja jail near Mumbai around 8.30 pm, Goswami drove to the Lower Parel studio of the channel, of which he is the Editor-in-Chief.

 

Goswami also singled out Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh for his 'illegal' arrest on November 4 in a 2018 suicide abetment case.

Alibaba sales for its post-Covid-19 Singles' Day shopping extravaganza hit $74 billion, a haul that was overshadowed by a 10 per cent drop in its shares on Wednesday after China published draft anti-trust rules aimed at internet platforms.

Infosys CEO Salil Parekh on Wednesday said the company is "well positioned" to continue with its growth and margin trajectory in the quarters ahead on the back of its focus on digital, large deals, expansion of existing accounts and attention to new clients.

 

Speaking at the Infosys Analyst Meet 2020, Parekh said the company has had a stable leadership team over the last three years that is working collaboratively, and is focussed on serving customers.

 

"I believe we are well positioned to continue our growth, and continue our margin trajectory, as we come out of COVID. You saw as we finished last financial year, we grew at 9.8 per cent, the year before that at 9 per cent and even in this COVID time, we are still growing last quarter at 2.2 per cent," he said.

Indian cricket team departs for high-profile Australia tour

The Indian cricket team on Wednesday departed for a two-month long tour of Australia where it will aim to build on the historic Test series win two years ago.

The BCCI tweeted photographs of the Indian contingent before departure with the players sporting customised PPE kits for travel amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"#TeamIndia is BACK! Let's embrace the new normal," read the photo caption on BCCI Twitter handle.

The majority of the India squad members were competing in the IPL and following the conclusion of their respective team's campaign, they moved to the bio-bubble created for the national team here.

Test specialists like Cheteshwar Pujara and the support staff had arrived here last month to enter the national team bio-bubble.

Rohit Sharma, who led Mumbai Indians to a record fifth IPL title on Tuesday night, and Ishant Sharma, who is recovering from internal oblique muscle tear injury at the NCA in Bengaluru, will join the team later. They both are only part of the Test squad.

TikTok asks court to intervene as Trump order looms

The popular video-sharing app TikTok, its future in limbo since President Donald Trump tried to shut it down earlier this fall, is asking a federal court to intervene.

TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, has until Thursday to sell off its US operations under an executive order that Trump signed in August.

Trump in September gave his tentative blessing to a ByteDance proposal meant to resolve US national security concerns by placing TikTok under the oversight of American companies Oracle and Walmart, each of which would also have a financial stake in the company. But TikTok said this week it's received no clarity from the US government about whether its proposals have been accepted.

Brent crude hits $45 on Covid-19 vaccine hopes and US oil stocks

The Brent crude oil benchmark rose to a more than two-month high above $45 a barrel on Wednesday on hopes of an effective Covid-19 vaccine and an industry report showing US crude inventories fell more than expected.

 

Brent was up $1.07, or 2.5 per cent, at $44.68 by 1450 GMT after hitting a session high of $45.30 - the first time it has cleared the $45 threshold since early September.

 

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude added $1.09, or 2.6 per cent, to $42.45.

 

Both benchmarks rose by nearly 3 per cent on Tuesday.

Ireland sees EU-UK trade talks going past mid-November deadline

An EU-UK trade pact is unlikely to come together this week and negotiations might go into the next, an Irish minister said on Wednesday, confirming a Reuters report that the sides were now set to miss their mid-November deadline for a new Brexit deal.

 

Britain left the bloc in January. A status quo transition period expires at the end of the year, and talks on trade rules that would apply from the start of 2021 have yet to yield a breakthrough.

 

"I think it's unlikely this week," said Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney. "I think it is likely to move into next week. At that point, the timelines start to get very tight - there are only 50 days left this year."
