Ex-JNU student leader Umar Khalid arrested in connection with Delhi riots

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid was arrested late on Sunday night for his alleged role in the northeast Delhi riots, sources said on Sunday.
 

He was questioned by the Delhi Police Crime Branch for a couple of hours on September 2 in connection with the riots.
 

Khalid was earlier booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in another case related to the riots. He was also quizzed by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police earlier regarding an alleged conspiracy behind the riots.
 

His mobile phone was also seized by the police.
 

Communal clashes had broken out in northeast Delhi on February 24 after violence between supporters of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and those against the legislation spiralled out of control, leaving at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.

Drug probe: NCB arrests six more persons from Mumbai

Six more persons were arrested from here on Sunday by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) probing the drug angle in connection with actor Sushant Singh Rajput death case, taking the total count of people held so far to 16, an official said.

 

The six accused have been identified as Karamjeet Singh Anand, Dwayne Fernandes, Sanket Patel, Ankush Anreja, Sandeep Gupta and Aftab Fateh Ansari, he said, adding that they were picked up after their names emerged during investigation.

 

They all were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said.

Cannabis in India: Delhi, Mumbai high on pot consumption, says report

After the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June, several friends of the actor have been arrested by the Narcotics Control Board (NCB) which claims it has busted a ring of suppliers of marijuana and cannabis, from all over India.

In India, cannabis is used as (a) bhang, which is legally available in many states and (b) ganja and charas, which are illegal according to the international drug conventions and the Indian law (the NDPS Act, 1985). Pak using underground tunnels to push terrorists, drones to drop arms: J&K DGP

Pakistan is using cross-border underground tunnels to push terrorists into India and drones to drop weapons for them, the chief of Jammu and Kashmir police said Sunday.

 

Director General of Police Dilbag Singh, however, said the anti-infiltration grid is active and anti-tunnelling operations are underway to scuttle "nefarious designs".

 

"Digging of tunnels beneath the IB is part of the nefarious designs of Pakistan to facilitate infiltration of terrorists into this side to step up terrorism," Singh told reporters in Samba district after inspecting the recently discovered 170-metre tunnel at Galar village along the IB.

 

The tunnel with a depth of 20-25 feet and originating from Pakistan was found by a BSF team near the border-fencing on August 28.

India to be self-reliant in fertilisers production by 2023: Gowda

India will be self-reliant in fertiliser production by 2023 as new units are being set up with an investment of Rs 40,000 crore to reduce dependency on imports, Fertilisers Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said on Sunday. Addressing a webinar organised by cooperative IFFCO for farmers of Karnataka, the minister said the government is promoting nano fertilisers as these are 25-30 per cent cheaper and give 18-35 per cent higher yield, according to an official statement.

India, Pakistan trade heavy fire on LoC in J&K's Poonch

Indian and Pakistani troops traded heavy fire on the Line of Control on Sunday after Pakistan resorted to unprovoked firing and shelling at Indian positions in J&K's Poonch district.

 

Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Devender Anand said at about 5.45 p.m. Sunday, Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and shelling with mortars along the LoC in Mankote sector of Poonch district.

 

"Indian Army retaliates befittingly", the spokesman said.

Banks sanction loans of Rs 1.6 trn to 4.2 mn MSMEs under ECLGS scheme

The finance ministry on Sunday said banks have sanctioned loans worth over Rs 1.63 trillion to more than 4.2 million business units under the Rs 3-trillion Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) for the MSME sector. On the disbursement front, however, over Rs 1.18 trillion doled out to 2.5 million MSME units, till September 10, which were hit by the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdowns.

Flyers can take videos in flights but can't use recording gadgets: DGCA

Aviation regulator DGCA "clarified" on Sunday passengers can take photos and videos inside flights but can't use any recording equipment that creates chaos, disrupts flight operations, violates safety norms or is banned by the crew members.

CBDT has deployed two-third of its workforce to deal with the faceless assessment scheme.

 

"Now, the National e-Assessment Centre (NeAC) which is headed by Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax is having a team of 32 Commissioners, 96 Principal Commissioner, 261 Assistant and Deputy Commissioners and 1274 Income Tax Officers," senior Income Tax officers told ANI.

Faceless Assessment Scheme was inaugurated as Phase 1 on October 7, 2019, with 58,320 assigned cases. On August 13 this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the platform for transparent taxation.

Retail inflation to come down with easing of lockdowns: CEA Subramanian

Attributing the rise in inflation to supply-side frictions, Chief Economic Adviser K V Subramanian has exuded confidence that retail inflation will come down in the days ahead with the easing of lockdowns.

 

According to the government data, retail inflation rose to 6.93 per cent in July, mainly driven by rising prices of food items like vegetables, pulses, meat and fish.

 

"If you look at inflation...it's primarily because of those supply-side frictions, but as local lockdowns are actually being reduced, these frictions should basically go down," he said.

SBI Card to enrol ''delinquent'' customers in restructuring plans: MD

SBI Card is in the process of enrolling "delinquent" customers, who did not repay after the end of moratorium, in the RBI restructuring scheme or its own repayment plan to provide them more time for repayments, a top company official said.
 

Due to the moratorium, a number of customers had not been paying for the first three months and the company treated them as standard accounts in line with the entire industry. However, since then, as the first moratorium ended, SBI Card made it a customer-led enrolment in the second moratorium in which a lot of customers did not enrol, SBI Card Managing Director & CEO Ashwini Kumar Tewari said.

Maharashtra: Central team visits flood-hit Bhandara, Gondia districts

A three-member team of the Centre visited Maharashtra's Bhandara and Gondia districts to review the damage caused by floods following heavy rains last month, officials said on Sunday.

 

Flooding took place in the last week of August in some parts of the two districts, located in the state's Vidarbha region, following heavy downpour and discharge of water from dams in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

 

The team, comprising officials from the Union rural development and agriculture departments, visited some villages in the two districts on Saturday to assess the damage caused to houses, cattle sheds and crops.

UCO Bank yet to undertake asset quality study, cites SC order for delay

State-owned UCO Bank has not been able to make an analytical study of its asset quality even after the end of the loan repayment moratorium period on August 31, heeding a Supreme Court directive that no accounts shall be downgraded for now, an official said.
 

On September 3, in a relief to stressed borrowers who are facing hardship due to adverse impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the top court had said that accounts which were not declared as non-performing assets till August 31 this year, shall not be declared NPA till further orders.
