TVS Motor plans Rs 300-crore capital expenditure amid Covid-19 pandemic

TVS Motor said it had lined up a capital expenditure of Rs 300 crore and was looking to invest Rs 75 crore in TVS Credit Services in 2020-21.

 

The company said it was planning to commercialise some of the intellectual properties (IPs) to be built by start-ups through the company’s Singapore subsidiary.

 

TVS Motor Chairman and Managing Director Venu Srinivasan expected the second quarter to be much better, but he cautioned on how the rest of the year would pan out as more cities were closing due to growing number of Covid-19 cases. Read more

Delhi STF received over 52,000 complaints till July 15

Over 52,000 complaints from various quarters were received till July 15 by the Special Task Force (STF) constituted to comprehensively oversee effective and proper enforcement of the provisions of the Delhi Master Plan and bye-laws, officials said on Friday.

 

The progress on the complaints received and action taken was reviewed during the 49th meeting of the STF held on Friday. Officers from all local bodies and other agencies attended the meeting.

 

"In total 52,253 complaints have been received by the STF till July 15 and action has been initiated on 45,955," a senior DDA official said.

Sushant case: Bihar team seeks help in probe from Mumbai cops

The Bihar police team, which is here to investigate an "abetment to suicide" case related to the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, on Friday sought assistance from their counterparts in Mumbai to probe the matter, an official of the city police said.

 

The visiting team on Friday evening submitted a written application seeking assistance from the Mumbai police in probing the case, he said.

 

Members of the Bihar police team visited the DCP (Crime) office in suburban Andheri and submitted the application, the official said.

Spirit Airlines warns of layoffs, ExpressJet's fate in doubt

Spirit Airlines has warned up to 30 per cent of its employees that they will lose their jobs in October, and regional carrier ExpressJet's future is in doubt after losing a key contract as the virus pandemic continues to hammer the airline industry.

 

Spirit is the latest airline to deliver layoff warnings to employees, which are required by federal law 60 days before large-scale job cuts.

 

The budget airline based in Miramar, Florida, said it told unions that about 20 per cent to 30 per cent of its pilots, flight attendants and other groups will be furloughed in October.

US imposes sanctions on Chinese company over abuse of Uighurs

The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on a powerful Chinese company in the Xinjiang province and two officials for what it said were human rights abuses against Uighurs and other ethnic minorities.

 

The move, the latest blow to US-China relations, came a week after US President Donald Trump closed the Chinese consulate in Houston, prompting Beijing to shutter the US consulate in Chengdu.

 

The US Treasury Department said in a statement it blacklisted the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, also known as XPCC, along with Sun Jinlong, former party secretary of the XPCC, and Peng Jiarui, deputy party secretary and commander of the XPCC, over accusations they are connected to serious human rights abuse against ethnic minorities in Xinjiang.

India's kharif rice sowing up 19 per cent so far

Area sown to rice, the main kharif crop, has increased by 19 per cent to 266.60 lakh hectares so far across the country in the current kharif season on account of good rains, the agriculture ministry said on Friday.

 

Among cash crops, cotton planting has risen by 11.29 per cent to 121.25 lakh hectares so far in the current kharif season of the 2020-21 crop year (July-June) from 108.95 lakh hectares in the year-ago period.

Alan Parker, director of "Midnight Express" dies at 76

British filmmaker Alan Parker, whose movies included Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express and Evita, has died at 76.

 

A statement from the director's family says Parker died Friday in London after a long illness.

Def ministry writes to CBFC; says advise production houses to seek NOC on Army theme content

Taking strong objection to the depiction of armed forces personnel in some web series, the Defence Ministry has written to the Central Board of Film Certification, urging that production houses may be advised to obtain a no objection certificate from the ministry before telecasting any film, documentary or web series on an Army theme, sources said.
 

The Defence Ministry had received some complaints raising strong objections about the portrayal of Indian Army personnel and the military uniform in an "insulting manner", they said.

Parliamentary Standing Committee submits final report on Code on Social Security

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour on Friday submitted to the Lok Sabha speaker its final report on the Code on Social Security, which seeks to subsume nine laws related to social security of workers.
 

The panel has made a case for "unemployment insurance and reducing continuous service period to one year from five years for getting gratuity". It also asked to specify the source of funding for running social security schemes enshrined in the Code.

Flipkart supports 600,000 artisans in India through Samarth programme

Walmart-owned Flipkart on Friday said it supports over 600,000 artisans, weavers and craftsmen across the country through its Samarth programme and is working on onboarding more such sellers to the platform.
 

The Samarth programme was launched last year, wherein the e-commerce major had partnered with five non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to help artisans use the online marketplace to sell their products.
