Govt appoints Ashima Goyal, Jayanth Verma, Shashanka Bhide as MPC members

The government has appointed three external members to the central bank’s panel that decides interest rates, said a government official. These three members are -- Ashima Goyal, member of Economic Advisory Council of Prime Minister, Shashanka Bhide, senior advisor at National Council for Applied Economic Research and Jayanth Verma who is a professor in Indian Institute of Management, Ahmadabad.

 

The appointment has come after the government faced widespread criticism over failing to act on time to appoint an external panel to the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). Last week, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had to defer its three-day interest-rate meeting, without giving any reasons or a new date of its policy decision. The meeting was scheduled on September 29, 30 and October 1. Read more

Mallya extradition: Center says not aware of 'secret proceedings' in UK

The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that "secret" extradition process was going on to bring fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya to the country but it was not aware about its status.

 

The Centre also told the top court that it was not a party to the proceedings. A bench of Justices U U Lalit and Ashok Bhushan asked Mallya's lawyer to inform the court what kind of "secret" proceedings are going on to extradite him. Read more

India sees China digging in for winter in eastern Ladakh: IAF Chief

India sees China digging in for the winter along the disputed border in eastern Ladakh, the Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria said on Monday.

 

The Air Force chief said that the next three months will depend on how talks between Indian and China progress. "Current progress is slow, what we see is [an] effort to dig in for the winter. We are taking action accordingly. Our further action will depend on the ground realities," Bhadauria said.

 

He also said that India realised in May that the border situation was unlike normal times. Chinese troops generally exercise at this time of the year. "We never expected them to move towards the border. But both the Indian Army and the IAF responded quickly and in record time," he said.

SpiceJet to start flights from India to London from Dec 4

SpiceJet on Monday said it will operate non-stop flights connecting Delhi and Mumbai with London from December 4. In a press release, the airline said it is the first Indian low-cost carrier to operate flights to the UK.

The Delhi-London flight and the Mumbai-London flight will operate under the air bubble agreement with the UK, it noted.

"SpiceJet will use an Airbus A330-900 Neo aircraft for these flights. The 371-seater twin-aisle A330 has a configuration of 353 economy and 18 business class seats," it added.

These flights from India will be operating to London's Heathrow airport, SpiceJet noted.

Delhi CM launches anti-air pollution campaign, says pollution can be life threatening in view Covid

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday launched a mega anti-air pollution campaign, saying polluted air can be life threatening in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. Under the campaign "Yudh Pradushan ke Virudh", separate plans have been prepared for each of the 13 pollution hotspots in the city, Kejriwal said during a digital press conference.

"Polluted air can be life threatening in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. Both affect lungs," he said.

Kejriwal said a "war room" is being set up to monitor all anti-pollution measures being taken by his government.

Adhir Chowdhury questions PM Modi's "silence" over Hathras rape case

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Monday questioned the "silence" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Hathras incident, and said he should coin a new slogan 'shut up India, hush up India' instead of 'Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Viswas' as "his hypocrisy has been exposed".

 

Chowdhury, the Leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha, wondered why the prime minister is silent on the killing and alleged gang-rape of a young woman in Hathras in Uttar Pradesh when he is "vocal on every issue from local to global".

 

"Modi Ji used to remain vocal in each and every issue from Local to Global but still remains mute on the heart- wrenching incident of Hathras, What is happened to u (you) Modi Ji? Where is your "Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikash Sabka Viswash?" Hypocracy (hypocrisy) has been exposed after Hathras," Chowdhury wrote on Twitter.
