OBC quota for local bodies: Gujarat govt forms commission in line with SC directives

Amid a row over OBC quota in the Gujarat panchayat polls, the BJP government in the state on Friday announced the formation of an independent commission to collect and analyse data about the nature and implications of backwardness in the local bodies.

A state government release said Chief Minister Bhuepndra Patel took the decision to form an independent commission to ensure members of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities get adequate representation in local body polls.

The commission, being formed as per the directives of the Supreme Court, will be headed by retired Gujarat High Court Judge KS Jhaveri and it will collect and analyse data about the nature and implications of the backwardness in the local bodies, the release further informed.

Murmu to meet Bengal's BJP lawmakers on Saturday, seek their support for Prez polls

Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal were among the 27 newly-elected members of Rajya Sabha who took oath as members of the Council of States on Friday.

Netflix said that spatial audio will help translate the cinematic experience of immersive audio to any stereo, "so the work creators do to bring you into the story happens no matter what device you use to watch Netflix".

Ex-FIFA boss Sepp Blatter and his former heir apparent Michel Platini were acquitted of criminal charges over a 2 million-franc ($2.1 million) payment to Platini, in a case that threatened to tarnish soccer’s image in the run-up to the World Cup in Qatar. 

 

The decision clearing them was handed down at a hearing on Friday morning at Switzerland’s top criminal court located in the city of Bellinzona, according to Agence France-Presse. 

 

The acquittal of the pair, who once ran global football’s two governing bodies, is a vindication of sorts given Blatter had argued that the case was an administrative matter that should never have gone to criminal trial.

FinMin exempts excise duty on ATF purchases by Indian carriers for overseas flights

The Finance Ministry has exempted domestic airlines running international flights from 11 per cent basic excise duty on ATF or jet fuel bought from oil marketing companies.

 

In a notification, the ministry said that ATF supplied as fuel to domestic carriers on international routes would continue to be exempted from basic excise duty from July 1.

 

Confusion arose on the leviability of the excise duty on domestic airlines for their foreign flights after the government on July 1 slapped a Rs 6 per litre special additional excise duty (SAED) or duty on the export of jet fuel.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen heads to Asia next week to meet with officials from Japan, South Korea and other G20 economies as she seeks to build support for a price cap on Russian oil, the Treasury Department said on Friday.

 

The trip, Yellen's first visit to the Indo-Pacific region as treasury secretary, comes amid nagging questions about how well a price cap on Russian oil could work absent the support of India and others now buying cheap Russian oil.

 

Yellen will hold bilateral meetings in Tokyo on July 12-13 before gathering with Group of 20 finance officials in Bali, Indonesia, from July 15-16, followed by a day of talks in Seoul on July 19, Treasury said in a statement.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who has been facing flak from the BJP over her recent controversial comments on Goddess Kali, has asserted that the saffron party is not the custodian of Hindu deities and it shouldn't teach Bengalis how to worship the goddess.

She said the BJP can't impose its views, based on ways of worshipping deities in North India, on people of other parts of the country who have different rituals that are in vogue for the last 2,000 years.

Moitra, while speaking to a Bengali news channel on Thursday night, said she had acted as a "mature politician" by speaking on the issue as BJP's attempt to "impose its agenda of Hindutva and thrusting its monolithic views" on other ethnic groups should be resisted and addressed once and for all for the sake of the country.

IndiGo to start flights between newly-built Deoghar airport, Kolkata from July 12

IndiGo on Friday said it will start flights between Kolkata and Jharkhand's Deoghar from July 12.

Aviation regulator DGCA had on June 29 granted aerodrome licence to the newly-built airport in Jharkhand, allowing it to handle narrow-body aircraft such as A321 and B737.

The Kolkata-Deoghar flights will operate four times each week from July 12, the airline said in a statement.

In another jolt to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction, 32 former corporators of Shiv Sena from Navi Mumbai extended their support to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in Thane on Thursday.

Thanking Chief Minister, Suresh Kulkarni, a former Shiv Sena Corporator of Navi Mumbai, said, "Eknath Shinde has stood by us whenever we need it and his style of working is attracting him and everyone else."

"We will be with him. He never declined anybody's phone call. Even if an ordinary party worker calls him up, he receives the call. It feels good," he said.

Last month, Eknath Shinde launched a rebellion against the party. The majority of MLAs sided with him, which led to the collapse of the MVA government led by Uddhav Thackeray.

GMR Group on Friday said its joint venture Angkasa Pura Aviasi has started operating the Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, Indonesia.

 

Angkasa Pura Aviasi (APA) is a joint venture between GMR Airports Ltd and Indonesia's state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II.

 

With the project, GMR Airports, a subsidiary of GMR Infrastructure, has entered the growing Indonesian aviation market and the project will cover a cooperation period of 25 years, according to a release.

The UP Vidhan Parishad secretariat has derecognised Samajwadi Party's Lal Bihari Yadav as the leader of opposition in the council, as the party's strength in the council has now fallen short of ten -- the minimum for the largest opposition party to get the post.

Over 1,100 hectare land acquired for logistic, transport hub near Delhi: UP minister informs Centre

As much as 1,143 hectares of land has been acquired in Noida and Greater Noida near Delhi to set up multi-modal logistic and transport hubs, Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister Nand Gopal Gupta 'Nandi' has informed a central panel on industrial corridor.

 

Acquisition of another 205 hectares of land in the region would be completed next month, the minister said during the first meeting of the Apex Monitoring Authority for the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme in Delhi on Thursday.

 

The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, chief ministers of different states, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka, besides state industries ministers and senior officials.
