After Press Council chief Markandey Katju, now West Bengal chief minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee today said that Sanjay Dutt, who was awarded five years of imprisonment by the Supreme Court in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, should be pardoned as he has already suffered a lot for the mistake he committed.

Banerjee on her official Facebook page said, “I knew Sunil Duttji during my Parliament days, when together we strongly fought against TADA. Eventually, Government had to withdraw TADA. Many requests from the civil society and film personalities have come to me to see that Sanjay does not suffer any more. Though it is not in my hand, I feel that he has already suffered a lot for the blunder he committed earlier. From complete wreck, he has again picked up his career to unfold his potential”.

Seeking pardon for Sanjay Dutt, the PCI chief had cited how the actor had, through his film, revived the memory of Mahatma Gandhi and the message of the father of the nation, an apparent reference to "Gandhigiri" in his Munnabhai films.

“Today, I fondly remember Sunil Duttji. He used to come to my residence whenever he was in Calcutta. If he were alive, he would have no doubt made all efforts to see that Sanjay does not suffer any more. My heart also echoes the same sentiments. Let us all pray that Sanjay lives a calm and peaceful life,” the minister added on her Facebook update.
