The 89th Academy Awards for excellence in cinema

The Oscars - as they are commonly known - were presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honor the best films of 2016. The show was hosted by TV presenter Jimmy Kimmel at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Most of the trends on Twitter and Facebook are related to one or the other aspect of these awards this morning. Marked by an irreverence for the newly inducted American President Donald Trump, the awards seem to be underlining the importance of dissent. La La Land was the big winner at the awards. Mahershala Ali got the Oscar for best performance in a supporting role for the movie Moonlight and Viola Davis won the Oscar for best supporting actress for the movie Fences. Emma Stone won the best actress award for movie La La Land.

Asghar Farhadi

Asghar Farhadi is an Iranian film director and screenwriter. His movie ' The Salesman' won the oscar in the best foreign language category. But Asghar Farhadi didn't attend the award ceremony to protest Donald Trump's travel ban. Iranian astronaut Anousheh Ansari accepted the awatd on the behalf of director Asghar Farhadi.
