Action Likely On Vohra Report

The Union cabinet is likely to work out modalitities to follow up the Vohra committee report today. The Centre has to file a progress report to the Supreme Court by September 8.

Dont you know that something known as Supreme Court exists in our country, Union home minister Indrajit Gupta asked reporters yesterday.

One of the proposals under consideration is that a high-level committee be appointed to look into the matter, another cabinet minister said.

The cabinet may decide the composition of the high-level committee tomorrow, he added.

The minister said all the parties now part of the United Front had wanted while in opposition that the then Congress government should table the full report of the Vohra committee. We had also asked the then government about follow up action. It is high time our government did something, he said.

The Supreme Court had on August 21 asked the Centre to file an affidavit by September 8, on what its follow up action. In March this year, the court directed the government to set up a nodal agency to curb the criminal-politician nexus.

The apex court made these observations while proceeding on the Jain hawala case. The court was looking into the question of autonomy to investigating agencies.
