All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) has threatened to go on strike on the issue of merger and consolidation in Public Sector banks.

"We oppose merger and consoidation in public sector banks and will organise strikes in banks," AIBEA General Secretary, C H Venkatachalam said after Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee asked public sector banks to explore merger options.

"Indian banking industry does not need consolidation of banks. Rather what is required today is expansion of public sector banks," he said.

The General Council of AIBEA has been convened to meet in Mumbai on July 9 and 10, to decide on the future course of action, he said.
