Since all the ten seats were under the Janata Dal belt, any setback might have serious consequences for Yadav. The CPI state secretariat is supporting the Samajwadi party candidate Ramswarath Rai in Belsand, and K D Yadav of the CPI-ML in Paliganj.
The main issue involved in the byelections in the state is aptly summed up by leader of the opposition Sushil Modi: The byelections will be contested between the forces opposing scamsters and those patronising them.
