Gujarat's first self-financed nursing college is expected to help in overcoming the shortage of one lakh nurses in the state. Union minister of State for Small Scale Industries Dinsha Patel will inaugurate the college here on August 21. In view of shortage of one lakh nurses in the state , the All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG) decided to start this college, its president, Jatin Modi said.

AIILSG imparts knowledge to the local bodies and also campaigns for best health practices. Built at a cost of Rs one crore, the college has facilities like library, laboratory, conference hall and hostel, he said.

Modi said the college has been recognised by the Indian Nursing Council and the Gujarat Nursing Council. In view of tremendous demand and shortage of trained nurses in India and abroad, and considering its employment potential, Gujarat Health Department had requested AIILSG to start nursing courses and this led to the setting up of the college, he said.

Hansa Patel, executive advisor to the AIILSG, said there are 30 seats in the advanced two-year Post Basic BSc nursing course whose fee has been fixed by a Gujarat High Court-appointed committee. The admission criteria is three and half years diploma in general nursing, she added.
