A state-of-the-art perishable cargo complex will be inaugurated tomorrow (Feb 2) at the Cochin international airport . The complex with a total area of 18,000 sft is fully computerised and has a capacity to handle 30,000 tonne cargo like fruits, vegetables and meat annually.
The two-storied complex has been constructed at a cost of Rs 50 crore. The Agri- Export Promotion and Development Agency (Apeda) provided Rs 13.2 crore while the Kerala government contributed the remaining amount.
The cargo complex has three large cold storages of which one is also equipped with freezer. A parking bay for cargo planes and an information counter will also come up later.
The National Horticulture Mission will extend assistance to the tune of Rs 13.25 crore for the development of the complex.
The complex will be officially opened by state chief minister VS Achuthanandan and Jairam Ramesh, minister of state for commerce.
