Questioning the central forces' version of firing on voters in self-defence in Cooch Behar that killed four people, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said her government will initiate a CID probe into the incident. Banerjee said there is no video footage or any other proof to substantiate claims of the central forces.

76.16% turnout in fourth phase of West Bengal assembly elections

West Bengal registered a voter turnout of 76.16 per cent till 5 pm during the fourth phase of polling on Saturday in 44 assembly constituencies spread across five districts, a senior official in the CEO's office said.

 

The highest turnout of 79.73 per cent was registered in Cooch Behar district, followed by 76.2 per cent polling in Hoogly. In South 24 Parganas it was 75.49 per cent, while in Howrah it was 75.03 per cent and in Alipurduar 73.65 per cent, he said.

 

Polling was held from 7 am to 6.30 pm in 15,940 polling nine assembly constituencies in Howrah, 11 in South 24 Parganas, five in Alipurduar, nine in Coochbehar and ten in Hooghly district. Read here

TMC MP Derek O'Brien on Saturday asserted that his party will win the assembly polls in West Bengal and send out a message to the BJP, saying while power and money can buy anything, it cannot buy the love of the state's people for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

 

In a video message, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader also said that the "game is on" in West Bengal, where the fourth leg of the eight-phase election was held on Saturday.

 

"Today we have completed four phases of the eight phase polls. 'Khela hobe', the match is on in Bengal. This is half-time and we are quiet confident that we got this one covered. We are winning Bengal as the two turncoat ministers who have joined the BJP, one fighting from Nandigram and the other from Domjur are both losing," O'Brien said. (PTI)
