Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said introduction of security features in all denominations of Indian bank notes was under way to check the menace of counterfeiting of currency.
The finance minister also said the present bank notes with the new rupee symbol would be in circulation shortly. New coins with the rupee symbol and better designs and shine would also be released in July, Mukherjee said at a function after releasing the new Procurement Manual of Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL).
The introduction of security features in notes is being piloted by the Directorate of Currency in the Ministry of Finance, Mukherjee said and urged all concerned to have this task completed at the earliest in a given time frame.
