Hearing of Musharraf treason case continues

A special court in Pakistan formed to try former president Pervez Musharraf for high treason resumed its hearing Tuesday.

The 70-year-old Musharraf is facing the charge of high treason, which can carry the death sentence, for imposing emergency and subverting the constitution in 2007.

Musharraf's lawyer Khalid Ranjha said the trial should be held under a military court, adding that a person falling under the jurisdiction of the Army Act could not be tried under any other court, reported the Dawn online.

Meanwhile, the Ex-Servicemen Legal Forum has submitted an application to the special court to become a party in the case.

The petition was sent by former army personnel Inamur Rahim to the registrar of the special court Abdul Ghani Soomro.

In the application, the petitioner sought the special court's assistance on the Army Act, adding that the Lahore High Court had already declared the 1977 Amendment of the Army Act as null and void.

The hearing of the case has been adjourned till Wednesday.
