Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is likely to step down from the board of directors as soon as a suitable replacement is found.

According to the Verge, Ballmer would still hold around 4% of all Microsoft stock, but he wouldn't be directly involved in board decisions as the company looks to transform and focus on devices and services.

Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is likely to remain more active at the company, depending on the new CEO choice, the report added.

The company is also considering Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg as a potential Ballmer successor.
