John McAfee, 67, the pioneer of anti-virus software and founder of McAfee, has been in hiding since mid-November. He is wanted by Belize police for questioning after McAfee’s neighbour, American expatriate Gregory Faull, was found murdered. McAfee has been residing in the Central American nation since 2008. Here are some quick facts about the eccentric millionaire:
- The former NASA programmer founded McAfee Associates in 1987, a company designed to fix computer bugs
- Incorporated his company in Delaware in 1992, forming McAfee Associates Inc.
- McAfee resigns possibly due to continuing controversy over the Michelangelo virus
- He cashes out his company stock, making him a millionaire many times over
- Retired to Belize in 2008, settling on Ambergris Caye, a tiny island 36 miles off the coast
- According to an NYT report, McAfee's personal fortune has fallen to about $4 million from a high of $100 million.
- QuorumEx, a new venture by McAfee headquartered in Belize, launched in 2010 to develop commercial antiobiotics
- Intel agrees to acquire McAfee Inc in August 2010 for $7.68 billion
- McAfee, a yoga fan, often moved around with bodyguards and would stick pistols in his belt; known for his lavish lifestyle
- There were complaints about the millionaire's numerous and noisy dogs; Faull was one of the locals who had complained about McAfee's attitude and his dogs
- According to the latest blog entry, McAfee says that he is “safe and in the company of two intrepid journalists from Vice magazine,” and that he is “not in Belize, but not quite out of the woods yet...”
