Vishnu Bodapati decided there wasn’t enough informed guidance in the market to help him decide on the best investment areas. So, he brought a senior scientist, an economist, and a mathematician together, to help build an artificial intelligence (AI) model that would learn to make informed decisions for them.
"At least Rs 450 crore of the corpus is our own proprietary investment. Hence, there is strong incentive to ensure the right decisions are made. We look at a model where we charge fees only when profits are better than the market average," said Nagpal. The company tracks over five years worth of data on more than 800 companies to rank these on the basis of their potential to provide returns.
Given the value of the investments, sector veterans feel such institutions need to have the backing of a large brokerage firm or banks to build consumer trust. Yet, with the fintech arena open for innovation, with initiatives like Startup India and Digital India backing players, coupled with strong performance, this is another area where the right algorithm might just do the trick.
