The improvement in the market has resulted in better performance for all our fund managers last week. From September 1, 2008 till date, the benchmark BSE 200 is down 35.7 per cent. Amar Ambani’s portfolio has come back in the green, while the other three fund managers are comfortably beating the benchmark.

All the four fund managers got active last week. Sadanand Shetty had the most trades, while Anand Agarwal and Amar Ambani also made some purchases. Last week, Shetty added over Rs 1 lakh of stocks to the portfolio, while Ambani invested nearly Rs 1 lakh.

BANKING GAINS

Last week most of Anand Agarwal’s activity was in the banking sector. He bought 10 shares of Axis Bank and 25 shares of ICICI Bank at the beginning of the week. He ended the week, by selling 20 shares of HDFC Bank and 50 shares of Axis Bank. Other than these trades, he sold 25 shares of Bharti Airtel.

His portfolio is still down almost 20 per cent and he continues to hold over Rs 5 lakh in cash. Jet Airways, Deccan Aviation and Reliance Communications with losses of 68.5 per cent (Rs 1.02 lakh), 58 per cent (Rs 0.23 lakh) and 42.8 per cent (Rs 0.33 lakh), respectively are weighing his portfolio down.

Kashyap Pujara’s activities were muted last week, with a sole trade - a buy order for 100 shares of Sterlite. However, his portfolio saw the sharpest recovery in line with the benchmark. While the benchmark index gained 10.4 per cent his net worth recovered from a negative return of 27.5 per cent on October 24 to a loss of 17.9 per cent now.

Century Textiles and Reliance Communications with negative returns of 51.4 per cent (Rs 0.35 lakh) and 41 per cent (Rs 0.15 lakh), respectively, are adversely impacting his portfolio. Averaging in Sterlite, helped him cut some losses, as the 100 shares that he purchased for Rs 19,250 are now worth Rs 28,200 - a sharp return of almost 47per cent.

Sandanand Shetty was active as usual, with 31 transactions last week - 17 on the buy side. He invested Rs 1 lakh and his portfolio is looking relatively healthy with eight out of the 11 stocks giving him positive returns.

His purchases were mostly in key frontline stocks. He entered HDFC, Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, Bhel, Cairn India and Hero Honda, while averaging his position in ICICI Bank and Lupin. He exited from Glenmark Pharma, United Phosphorus and Everest Kanto.

After buying Reliance the week before, Amar Ambani did some more shopping last week on Muhurat Day - Tech Mahindra, Bharti Airtel and Union Bank. All his stocks are giving him positive returns - Reliance is leading with a solid return of 37.3 per cent. Bharti Airtel, too, has appreciated 14.5 per cent from his acquisition price.

As a result of his purchases, his portfolio is the positive with a marginal rise of 0.5 per cent at Rs 10.05 lakh as against a negative return of 1.28 per cent in the previous week. However, he continues to hold a fairly high proportion of cash at 85.3 per cent.
