Sugar prices hardened by Rs 50 per quintal in the national capital today on hectic buying, influenced by reports of fresh government steps to allow export of sweetener.
Marketmen said sugar rose in the market after the government's decision to allow export of five lakh tonnes of white sugar.
However, better-than-expected crops production this year capped the upsurge in sugar prices to some extent.
Sugar ready medium and second grade prices swifted from Rs 3,050-3,200 and Rs 3,025-3,175 to settle at Rs 3,100-3,250 and Rs 3,075-3,225 per quintal.
Mill delivery medium and second grade prices also hardened from Rs 2,800-3,000 and Rs 2,790-2,990 to finish at Rs 2,850-3,050 and Rs 2,840-3,040 per quintal.
