A cafe has reportedly issued a groveling apology for making a sick joke about the killing of Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Scorch-O-rama in Wellington, New Zealand, has been issuing receipts to customers with the joke that stated that Pistorius was super keen to get a new bathroom door, but his girlfriend was dead against it.

The insensitive joke refers to the fact Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp while she hid behind his bathroom door on Valentine's Day last year, The Daily Star reported.

A user posted on the restaurant's Facebook page that their 'joke' about the killing of a woman in an incident of domestic violence just ended their family tradition of starting and ending their rides around the peninsula at Scorching Bay.

The cafe's owner Keith Morrison posted that they are truly sorry and removed it as soon as they had that vital moment of awareness. The owner also added that they apologise again for any hurt or distress they caused people, adding that it was absolutely never their intention.

As well as issuing an apology Morrison donated nearly 500 pounds to the Women's Refuge.

Pistorius, a six-time Paralympic champion, would be sentenced on October 13 after being found guilty last month of the culpable homicide of Steenkamp. He could face 15 years in prison for his crime, the report added.
