China has accused Japan of 'empty talks' over the disputed islands in the East China Sea, while ruling out chances of top-level talks at the forthcoming G-20 summit.

The BBC reports that China's Deputy Foreign Minister Li Baodong ruled out the possibility of a meeting with the Japanese at the G-20 summit due next week.

Li criticised Japan for not taking steps to resolve the issue and said that a meeting between leaders was not simply for the sake of shaking hands and taking pictures, but to resolve problems.

Earlier, Japan had indicated it would like more dialogue with China on the territorial dispute over a chain of islands in the East China Sea.

Tokyo bought three islands from their private Japanese owner last year, which further strained its ties with Beijing.

Since then, Chinese vessels have been sailing in and out of the territorial waters around the Senkaku islands, prompting fears of an accidental clash with Japan.

Three Chinese coast guard vessels had sailed into Japanese waters around the islands on Tuesday, the report adds.
