Batting mainstay AB de Villiers' solid resistance came to an end on 85 as South Africa reached 177-7 on the stroke of tea on the opening day of the second Test against India in Bengaluru on Saturday.
Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin received an able support from fellow spinner Ravindra Jadeja to maintain complete stranglehold over the tourists. Both the spinners claimed three wickets each.
Jadeja dismissed Dean Elgar (38) soon after South Africa resumed their innings in the second session. De Villiers, who is playing his 100th Test, continued to hold the innings but subsequently fell prey to Jadeja's delivery in the last bowl of the session.
Fast bowler Varun Aaron also claimed the crucial wicket of captain Hashim Amla for seven.
Pace spearhead Ishant Sharma replaced Umesh Yadav after serving his one-match suspension while Amit Mishra made way for bowling all-rounder Stuart Binny.
