Wimbledon semifinalist and Maria Sharapova's off-court partner Grigor Dimitrov easily advanced to the second round of the US Open as he dispatched American Ryan Harrison 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in a little over two hours.
Czech Tomas Berdych beat Australian Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets to advance to the second round. Berdych, who beat Hewitt 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, said that the conditions were extremely tough, adding that the heat, the wind, and facing Hewitt for the first round, it's nothing that one really wants to have.
Croatian tennis ace Marin Cilic advanced to the second round after Cypriot Marcos Baghdati, who lost 6-3,3-1, was forced to retire due to injury, The BBC reported.
Spain's Feliciano Lopez had to fight hard against Ivan Dodig, who was forced to retire in the fifth set. Lopez won 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 1-1.
Latvian tennis ace Ernests Gulbis also advanced to the second round of the US Open after defeating France's Kenny de Schepper 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, the report added.
