FIFA communications director Walter De Gregorio has stepped down from his post after cracking a joke about the governing body on Swiss TV.

As per the BBC, Gregorio told Swiss chat show Schawinski, "The FIFA president, secretary general and communications director are all travelling in a car. Who's driving? The police."

Three days after the program was aired, FIFA came out with a statement that De Gregorio announced he had decided "to relinquish his office with immediate effect as director of communications and public affairs."

Gregorio has been the public face of the organisation throughout the recent crisis and has been regularly addressing the media as scandal after scandal broke.

However, according to reports, it is being said that ex-FIFA president Sepp Blatter has asked him to step down from the post.

Blatter himself stepped down from the presidential post just two days after he was re-elected by the FIFA Congress in Zurich.

The world football's governing body has been in news ever since seven of its officials were arrested over corruption charges by Swiss Police in May.
