In an apparent jibe at the Union HRD Ministry's order for all Central Universities to hoist the national flag, JD (U) general secretary K.C. Tyagi on Friday urged RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to hoist the tricolor instead of the saffron flag at organisation's headquarters.
"I welcome this decision of the HRD Ministry that the flag should be hoisted atop the buildings of the university buildings. But I would request the RSS chief to hoist the tricolor instead of the saffron flags at the RSS headquarters, this would strengthen the national integrity," Tyagi told ANI.
In an attempt to evoke students' patriotic spirit, the government has made it mandatory for each central university in the country to fly an Indian flag on a 207-feet high mast.
The decision was unanimously supported at a meeting called by Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani on February 18 in which the vice-chancellors of 46 central universities participated.
"All central universities to fly national flag on a 207-feet high mast on their campuses to signify 'strong and united' India," the HRD Ministry said in a statement.
The government claimed that the proposal came from the vice-chancellors.
