After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dethroned him in the recently concluded Assam assembly elections, former chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday made it clear that he was not retiring from active politics and said the Congress Party will revive itself in the state.

"We tried our level best, now we have to regain our loss. We will reorganize the Congress. We have to get the support of the people," he told ANI.

Gogoi further said the Congress will play the role of a constructive opposition and support Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP Government in good cause and extend full cooperation.

The 81-year-old leader also dismissed assumptions that he would retire from active politics post the humiliating loss in Assam.

"I will be very much in politics and I am not retiring. I am grateful to the party and I will fulfil my duty by rendering my services," Gogoi said.

In the 126-seat Assam assembly, the National Democratic Alliance secured an absolute majority, with the BJP claiming 60 seats, AGP 14 and BPF 12. The Congress, which had secured 78 seats in the 2011 assembly election, reduced to just 26 seats.
