At least 32 Palestinians were killed in the early hours of Wednesday across Gaza in fresh Israeli bombardments.

According to Dawn, medics said a shelling shortly after 5:30 am (0230 GMT) killed 20 people at a UN school being used as a shelter for those displaced by the war, without giving immediate details.

Confirming the Israeli assault, a UN official said that the shelling hit a bathroom and two classrooms on the site in Jabalia refugee camp.

However, he gave a lower initial toll of between 13 and 15 dead, the report said.

Earlier, a shelling in the northern Gaza Strip killed an eleven-year-old handicapped girl.

Meanwhile, after a senior figure in the West Bank, claiming to speak for Hamas said that the militant outfit is ready to broker a truce with Israel to end the Gaza conflict, a Hamas commander rejected the claim saying that his soldiers are eager for death.

Mohammad Deif, commander of Hamas' military wing, made the statement in an audio recording that surfaced at the end of a destructive day in Gaza, reported the BBC.

Officials in Gaza said that the total number of Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes has climbed to 1,200 while 6,700 have been wounded. Most of those who have been killed were civilians.

Israel on the other hand, has lost 53 soldiers since it launched an offensive against Hamas on July 8.
