Security forces gunned down a militant during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir, said a senior police officer on Monday.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mumtaz Ahmad, said the militant was killed when he attacked a patrol party in Kulgam district and critically injured one trooper.
"We cordoned off the area after a (patrol) party was fired upon. We also cordoned off the orchards in neighbourhood. During the search operation, again (patrol) party was fired upon. We asked the militant to surrender but he continued firing. The militant was killed during the gun battle," Ahmad said.
The slain rebel was identified as Ataillah Bhat.
Earlier in the day, unidentified gunmen opened fire at a franchise store of state-run telecom service provider, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in Sopore town of the state, killing one person and injuring two others.
