Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza and her mixed doubles partner Brazil's Bruno Soares beat American Abigail Spears and Mexico's Santiago Gonazalez to bag the US Open crown on Friday.
Mirza, who won her third Grand Slam mixed doubles title with the win, and Soares beat Spears and Gonazalez 6-1, 2-6, 11-9.
Soares claimed a second US Open mixed doubles title to go with his 2012 victory with Russian Ekaterina Makarova. Mirza had lifted mixed doubles titles at the 2009 Australian Open and 2012 French Open with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi, The Express Tribune reported.
Mirza and Soares, playing their first event together, needed six match points to take victory on Friday with the Indian star celebrating by performing an enthusiastic bunny hop into the arms of the Brazilian.
Mirza, who double faulted on the first match point, said that she got tight, and added that Soares held his nerve. She said that she needed that a little bit with her serve, as she was serving well till then.
The Indian tennis ace, who is married to former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik, also said that she was making a lot of first serves, adding that it is never easy and no matter how many one wins, it's never easy to close it out.
