Returning Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho had reportedly made a last-ditch effort to sign new Arsenal player Mesut Ozil from his former club Real Madrid prior to his transfer this season.

According to the Mirror, the Portuguese boss made contact with his former club in an attempt to beat his Premier League rivals to the signature of the German international.

However, the report mentioned that despite his ties with the Spanish champions, Mourinho had moved 'too late' to conclude a deal for Ozil, who has performed for his club, as the 42 million-pound offer had already been received from Arsenal by Real.

Aside from the failed move for Ozil, Mourinho, who claimed one La Liga title and one Copa del Rey crown during his three seasons in Spain, also made offers for Ozil's international colleague Sami Khedira and Portuguese defender Fabio Coentrao, the report added.
