Oz players trial new helmet safety guard during net session

Australian cricketers tried out a new helmet safety attachment on Thursday, redesigned in the wake of the Phillip Hughes tragedy, while batting in the nets ahead of their World Cup tie against Scotland.

Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and George Bailey tested the new Masuri StemGuard clip-on, made of honeycomb plastic and foam, during their training session at Bellerive Oval.

Reflecting on the newly designed helmet, Cricket Australia Executive General Manager of Team Performance Pat Howard said that Masuri had worked very hard to bring the guard to market in a very short period of time, adding that they appreciate and commend that, News.com.au reported.

Last year, Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes was passed away after succumbing to injuries he endured from a bouncer at the SCG.

However, Cricket Australia also said that the players have now been given the guards to trial at training before deciding whether they wear them in match conditions, adding that it is very much a personal decision which they would respect.
