Police arrest two in Belgium over suspected attack plot

Federal prosecutors have said that police have arrested two men suspected of planning an attack in Belgium following house searches.

Identified as 33-year-old Nourredine H and his brother Hamza H, the duo will today appear before a judge to determine whether they should be held in custody beyond an initial 24 hours.

"Based on provisional results from the investigation, it appears that there were plans to carry out an attack somewhere in Belgium," the Guardian quoted the statement of federal prosecution office, as saying.

The statement added that there was no immediate connection with the attacks at Brussels airport and the city's metro on March 22 in which 32 people were killed.

Following the recent terrorist attacks in the country, the Police carried out seven house searches in the region of Mons and also in Liege on Friday evening.

Brussels, home to European Union institutions and the Nato headquarters are on the second highest security alert level following the attacks.
