Terming the civilian killings by militants in Assam as an act of terror and not a mere case of insurgency, Union Home minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday warned of a zero tolerance policy towards terror groups like the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Sangbijit faction).

"An unfortunate and shameful incident, Government of India has taken it very seriously. We have adopted a policy of zero tolerance towards terror groups, same policy will be applied on group responsible for this incident," said Rajnath.

The Home Minister had earlier held a meeting with the district administration at Biswanath Chariali in violence-hit Sonitpur district. Singh arrived in the state last evening to assess the situation and held meeting with the Assam Chief Minister and top security officials.

The security forces are maintaining a strict vigil at the violence-hit areas.

Earlier on Tuesday, the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) attacked innocent villagers in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts of Assam, killing over 70 people.

According to reports, the State Home department has instructed the administration of all the districts to remain alert.
